Expand your rhythmic skills and creativity. This class is for all instruments, singers and composers (not just drummers)! It will help you with whatever style of music you play, whether jazz or not. Rhythm is part of all music, and we can all be inspired by it.
We will combine practice (rhythmic exercises, playing together) with theory about how rhythm works. Topics include:
- Exercises for playing more accurately and confidently
- Getting rhythm into your body: clapping, stepping and vocalizing
- Concepts: how rhythm works; why some rhythms are easier and others harder
- Listening: some styles you know, some you don’t (yet)
- Polyrhythms: African and Latin music
- Odd meters: Balkan and Arabic approaches
- Improvising more rhythmically on your instrument
- How rhythm works in melodies
- Composing with rhythm
