Fall 2024: Composition Workshop (10 weekly 90-minute sessions)

Join saxophonist and composer Sarah Manning this fall for a ten-week online composition workshop. This hands-on course is suitable for all genres, with a focus on the compositional process rather than theoretical analysis — including ways to generate and bring ideas to life and how to listen to music to identify instrumentation, texture, and alternative structural and scoring concepts that you like (or dislike) in order to shape your own style. Suitable for anyone with intermediate to advanced musical knowledge, requiring the fundamental ability to spell chords. Students will be given weekly exercises, present a final work at the end of the session, and be provided with practical resources that complement their work (such as music notation software and listening recommendations). Across the semester classes will be balanced between instruction, group conversations, and critical feedback.

Class size – 12 to 20 participants; will only run if minimum number of enrollees is realized
