Drum Masterclasses

Monday – Clarence Penn

Transcription: Beyond the Notes on the Page

We will discuss the benefits of transcribing and take it to the next level – we will examine how the transcriptions we’ve worked on so diligently can now become a launch pad for our practice routine.

Tuesday – Francisco Mela

Learning the Language of the Masters

Ride cymbal patterns are the signature sound of the Masters. We will examine how players like Elvin, Tony Williams, Art Blakey and Philly Joe’s sounds can be instantly identified by how they play the ride cymbal and then talk about how to incorporate that into your own personal language.

Wednesday – Claire Arenius

Comping for Drummers

A deeper look into spontaneous composition as it relates to accompaniment and soloing

Thursday – Brian Shankar Adler

Composing From the Drums

Brian Shankar Adler will share some of the secrets that he has discovered while composing from the drummer’s chair. From grooves and vamps, to the creation of tunes and longer works, we will look at some key examples from the drummer/composer lineage and break down some tools and practices that can unlock new compositional material from a rhythmic standpoint.

Friday – Corey Fonville

New Age of Jazz and Hip-Hop Drums

This masterclass will explore the impact of jazz on Rap/Hip-Hop music, from both rhythmic and harmonic perspectives. This workshop (which includes a Spotify Playlist for the entire community) will prove the fact that many of the current trend-setters in Jazz (like Christian Scott, with whom Fonville plays) have been deeply impacted by Rap/Hip-Hop. The benefits go both ways and are mutually beneficial.
