What Is This Thing Called Love

composed by Cole Porter

After the community meeting on Sunday evening, August 6th, instrumentalists will join together in the music room to play through Cole Porter’s “What Is This Thing Called Love.” The faculty will be listening in and thinking about combinations of compatible musicians for six separate ensembles that will work together during the program. Later that night the faculty will meet and form these groups.

The line-up for each ensemble will be posted by breakfast-time on Monday morning on the bulletin board in the dining hall and at the entry to the music building (Calder Hall).

Instrumentalists should learn “What Is This Thing called Love” by memory if possible (we will have lead sheets if needed). Learn the melody and practice improvising over the chord changes.

Below you will find lead sheets for common jazz instruments, play-along recordings for practicing and classic recordings for inspiration.

Have fun!
