SUMMARY:VJC's Annual Big Band Gala: A Tribute to Artie Shaw
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the VJC Big Band performs a benefit gala for the VJC Scholarship Program. This time\, it honors the legendary Artie Shaw by welcoming four affiliates of the Artie Shaw Orchestra to join in for the evening to perform dance music using original arrangements that he made famous. This very special dance concert will feature three current members of the Artie Shaw Orchestra: Sara Hayes on guest vocals\, Artie Shaw Orchestra Director Matt Koza on clarinet\, Kerry MacKillop on trumpet\, and past orchestra member John Wheeler (who now plays for the VJC Big Band) on trombone. These musical guests will be swinging with VJC’s Big Band under the direction of its music director Rob Freeberg. \nArtie Shaw was in the top echelon of bandleaders during the Swing Era’s height of popularity. Between 1935 and 1945 one could experience this music live and dance to the touring ensembles of Artie Shaw\, Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Woody Herman\, Benny Goodman and the Dorsey Brothers. There is no substitute for listening and dancing to this music live–it wildly surpasses hearing it on record. Take advantage of the opportunity and come experience true bliss: spend the night reminiscing and dancing to beautiful\, classic music: “Begin the Beguine\,” “Deep Purple\,” “Indian Love Call\,” “Stardust” and “Frenesi” are just a handful of the swinging jazz standards made famous by Shaw’s Orchestra\, and they will be performed at the Vermont Jazz Center by a full\, swing band–all while raising money for the VJC Scholarship Fund. DESCRIPTION:The VJC combines its two seasonal Emerging Artist concerts into one major event this year. The festival welcomes youthful audiences and performers through inclusive presentations\, attractive pricing and Q&A sessions with the artists. \nFriday\, Nov. 2nd\nLocal youth ensembles will perform in numerous downtown venues as part of Brattleboro’s monthly Gallery Walk night. Collaborators include area schools\, BrattRock\, Youth Services\, the Boys and Girls Club\, 118 Elliot\, Echo\, The Lounge and Strolling of the Heifers. \nSaturday\, Nov. 3rd\nA full-day of showcases at the Jazz Center with college and high school ensembles performing on our stage. Each session will be followed by commentary from a panel of professional musicians. The late afternoon will include a Q and A session/clinic with members of our guest bands. The evening will conclude with a doubleheader concert featuring two exciting\, up-and-coming youthful groups: Sonic Asylum\, led by pianist Arcoiris Sandoval and King Klave\, led by drummer\, Amaury Acosta\, both are from New York City.

SUMMARY:Christian McBride and the New Jawn Quartet
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Six-time Grammy Award winning bassist Christian McBride leads an all-star quartet that draws on the powerhouse connection between McBride and drummer Nasheet Waits. The frontline of Josh Evans (trumpet) and Marcus Strickland (sax) soar as they are propelled by one of the world’s greatest rhythm sections with no piano or guitar chords to ground them. The word “Jawn” is used in Philadelphia slang (McBride’s home town) to describe a “person place or thing” (Urban Dictionary). Christian is referring to “The New Thing\,” perhaps alluding to the music of Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins when they were exploring chord-less quartet music in the early 1960s. All four of the musicians in this quartet are themselves remarkable leaders. They have gathered together in this configuration to explore the creative potential of music without a harmonic instrument\, to discover new sounds and develop new forms of expression. \nMcBride is one of the most-recorded bassists and leading representatives in jazz\, having played with such top names as Herbie Hancock\, Chick Corea\, Freddie Hubbard\, Roy Hargrove\, Pat Metheny and others too numerous to mention. He is also one of its leading spokespersons. He hosts “Jazz Night in America” on NPR and “The Lowdown\, Conversations with Christian” on SiriusXM.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Etienne Charles and Creole Soul
DESCRIPTION:This Trinidad-born trumpet star claims that\, for him\, “jazz is Creole music.” His performances incorporate the songs and rituals of the Caribbean carnival that influenced him to pursue music: danceable\, percussion grooves that drive masterful\, improvisational forays to delectable heights. The recipient of a Lincoln Center Millennial Swing Award and a CMA New Works Grant\, Charles is now an assistant professor at Michigan State University. He has released three highly acclaimed albums as a leader and performed/recorded with luminaries including Wynton Marsalis\, Marcus Roberts\, Monty Alexander\, Maria Schneider\, the Count Basie Orchestra and Roberta Flack. In the promo video for his latest recording\, Charles explains the connection he makes between his compositions and the carnivals of Trinidad: [Carnivals are imbued with] “melody\, rhythm\, dance and image. We can now take the sound of it and take the colors of it\, the energy of it. Because this is us as a people…this is our way of celebrating freedom\, life\, death\, family\, our history\, our culture\, our food\, our music. It’s all in one word and that’s “carnival.”

SUMMARY:Eugene Uman's Convergence Project
DESCRIPTION:Eugene Uman\, piano; Michael Zsoldos\, saxophone; Jeff Galindo\, trombone; David Picchi\, bass; Jon Fisher\, drums + special guests \nEugene Uman’s annual concert at the VJC has become an opportunity for him to assemble a dream band that manifests his vision and unites his musical influences. Uman’s compositions draw from a vocabulary of modern jazz\, hard bop\, rock\, soul\, Latin American rhythms and gospel; listeners can expect a “convergence” of the music he loves\, a mash-up of styles where groove is king. Uman’s energetic playing and writing style is flavored with the Latin rhythms that he has absorbed from numerous excursions to South America. Several of his compositions employ forms and grooves adapted from Colombian music such as cumbia\, pasillo\, puya\, bambuco\, and currulao. In the last several years\, with the addition of Jon Fisher’s drumming and David Picchi’s bass work\, the Convergence Project’s focus has evolved to highlight their profound strengths in funk and soul. Uman’s most recent creative venture is to mesh wordless vocals\, sung by Wanda Houston\, with the harmonized melodies of the horn lines and to add lyrics\, penned by Verandah Porch and Patty Carpenter\, to his Gospel-tinged compositions. \n“I always love listening to Eugene’s compositions; they make so much musical sense and bring you on a journey with a very healing\, uplifting feel.” — Jerry Bergonzi
