SUMMARY:Ambrose Akinmusire
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Jazz Center is pleased to present on September 17th\, 2022 at 8:00 PM\, the Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet featuring Mr. Akinmusire on trumpet along with Sam Harris on piano and Tim Angulo on drums (bassist TBA). This is a live\, in-person concert with no live streaming. Because Ambrose Akinmusire lives in California and seldom tours\, this concert will be a special and rare event. The musicianship will be stellar and the quality of the experience will be sublime. This concert will be a very special\, limited experience. \nAkinmusire’s most recent album\, his fifth for Blue Note Records\, On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment\, has been nominated as Best Jazz Instrumental Album for the 2021 Grammy Awards. He is a truth-teller whose music is an expression of his personal journey as a Black man. Although he loves playing jazz standards\, he has chosen to compose original music that draws attention to the causes he feels strongly about\, especially the realities of racism. He explained: “It’s important to me to talk about the injustices that Black people experience\, and the fear that I have walking around the United States and really a lot of places in the world. In my music I am trying to express the beauty and the pain at the same time\, trying to express what is to me the most defining part: resilience.” \nStrong convictions define each of Akinmusire’s albums as a leader. His compositions and arrangements aren’t easy listening\, but they are so well-balanced that the struggles and anxiety that do emerge are part of a bigger picture that is quelled by a universal equilibrium balanced by long stretches of sensitive playing and empathetic reflection. His sound on the trumpet is unlike anyone else’s. Akinmusire masterfully bends notes up and down to make his horn sound like the melismas of a human voice. \nAkinmusire sees Black music as a continuum. He sees himself as a “channel” for its expression. One of his most striking (and perhaps controversial) realizations is that he views hip hop music as the natural evolution of Black music. In a conversation with jazz blogger\, Phil Freeman\, he gets into it: “So for me hip hop is jazz… I can hear Louis Armstrong in Kendrick Lamar\, I really can. It’s kind of like what I was saying about Art Blakey and gospel. Black music at the end of the day is Black music. And I would argue that I make Black music\, and therefore I make jazz\, and therefore I make gospel – and it’s all part of the same tree. You can’t rip a branch off of the same tree and plant it\, and convince everybody that what grows is a different tree\, Black music is Black music.” \nSetting up this concert has been years in the making\, but it will be worth the wait. Come experience Ambrose Akinmusire\, a legendary trumpet artist\, a living legend who speaks for his generation as a respected leader and spokesperson.

Our program is dedicated to creating playing situations that honor the historical context but embrace forward-thinking concepts through jam sessions\, ensembles and listening opportunities. SUMMARY:Nduduzo Makhathini
DESCRIPTION:Nduduzo Makhathini grew up in the lush and rugged hill country of South Africa\, where music and ritual practices are symbiotically linked. The area is significant historically as the site of the mid-19th century Zulu kingdom where the Zulu/African warrior code evolved. Drumming\, singing and dancing are interwoven into the Zulu system/code and\, according to his press materials\, understanding this legacy gives us a window into understanding Makhathini’s own personal vision and creative process. \nIn Makhathini’s artistic world\, like in much of African culture\, there are no boundary lines drawn between creating art and living in harmony with the natural world.  His presentations are musical experiences as opposed to concerts. They are expressions of a deeper life\, a means to create shared\, intentional\, spiritual experiences where the energy of the audience is inclusive and pervasive. Makhathini has tried to capture that experience in his recent Blue Note Records debut\, Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds. \nMusical influences for Makhathini include the venerable legends of South African jazz: Bheki Mseleku\, Moses Molelekwa\, and Abdullah Ibrahim. His mentor Mseleku\, introduced Makhathini to the music of John Coltrane’s classic quartet with McCoy Tyner. “I came to understand my voice as a pianist through John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme\,” he says. “… I had always been looking for a kind of playing that could mirror or evoke the way my people danced\, sung and spoke. Tyner provided that and still does in meaningful ways.” \nMakhathini is a member of Shabaka Hutchings’ band Shabaka and the Ancestors\, appearing on their 2016 album Wisdom of Elders. He has recorded or toured with Logan Richardson\, Nasheet Waits\, Tarus Mateen\, Stefon Harris\, Billy Harper\, Azar Lawrence\, and Ernest Dawkins. Makhathini has released eight albums a a leader: Ikhambi won Best Jazz Album at the South African Music Awards (SAMA). His Blue Note debut Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds was released in 2020 to wide critical acclaim. The New York Times naming it one of the “Best Jazz Albums of 2020” and DownBeat naming Nduduzo among their “25 for the Future” list. Letters from the Underworld also cinches a partnership between Blue Note Records and Universal Music Group Africa that has led to the creation of Blue Note Africa. Mahkhatini has performed at festivals around the world\, at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City\, and appeared as a guest with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on their 3-night musical celebration The South African Songbook. He is the head of the Jazz Studies department at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:George Cables Trio
DESCRIPTION:George Cables is a true jazz master\, revered by aficionados and peers alike for his inventive harmonic concepts and beautiful\, lyrical style. He will be performing in a trio setting at the jazz center with Essiet Essiet on acoustic bass and Jerome Jennings on drums. \nCables was born in New York City in 1944\, and was initially a classically trained pianist. He attended the High School of Performing Arts and then went on to study at Mannes College of Music. As a young man he was drawn to jazz and began studying and playing gigs around New York at the Top of the Gate\, Slugs\, and other venues. During that time\, he toured and recorded with the legendary drummer Max Roach. His piano can be heard on Roach’s seminal album\, Lift Every Voice and Sing. In 1969\, Cables was the pianist for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for a short time and then went on to tour with tenor titan Sonny Rollins.  Rollins took Cables to the West Coast where he took up residency. Collaborations and recordings by Mr. Cables include work with tenor saxophonists Joe Henderson\, Dexter Gordon\, Sonny Rollins\, trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. The longest standing relationship Cables developed was with alto saxophonist Art Pepper.  Cables became Pepper’s pianist of choice\, so much so that Pepper gave him the moniker “Mr. Beautiful.” Cables has recorded almost 40 albums as a leader and upwards of 200 albums as a sideman with some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time\, including Frank Morgan\, The Cookers\, Archie Shepp\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Eddie Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Art Pepper\, Dexter Gordon\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Frank Morgan\, Max Roach\, Gary Bartz\, Bud Shank\, Phil Woods\, Red Mitchell\, Woody Shaw\, Roy Haynes\, Conrad Herwig\, Seamus Blake\, Chico Freeman\, Winard Harper\, Joe Henderson\, Von Freeman\, Sonny Rollins\, John Stubblefield\, Bobby Shew\, Louis Hayes\, Ralph Lalama\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Harold Land\, Shorty Rogers\, Joe Farrell\, Kazumi Watanabe\, Curtis Fuller\, Joe Chambers\, Frank Foster\, Frank Lacy and many others. \nThis year each concert will have an in-person audience as well as a livestream component. As Downbeat magazine says\, his “playing erupts through the layers of lush arrangements like consistent currents of electricity\, high-powered and full of luminous energy.” At 26 years old\, he is a virtuosic leader\, recording his own projects and yet he still finds the time and the focus to learn the complicated arrangements of many of the top groups in New York and Los Angeles including Makaya McCraven (Universal Beings\, 2018)\, Maria Grand\, Kassa Overall\, Nicole Mitchell\, Gerald Clayton\, Melissa Aldana\, Walter Smith III\, Georgia Anne Muldrow\, Jure Pukl\, Rajna Swaminathan\, Wynton Marsalis & the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Marquis Hill\, who penned liner notes for his latest Blue Note Release\, Who Are You? Due to the pandemic\, Ross has twice had to cancel appearances at the Vermont Jazz Center. Hopefully the third time will be the charm. \n  \nRoss is making the vibraphone a more familiar and accessible sound to audience members of his generation. His music is intelligent\, beautiful\, and rhythmically charged. He attributes his meticulous attention to tone-quality to the influence of his teacher\, Stefon Harris. Depending on the context\, his notes are either bell-like and sustained\, or short and rhythmically driving. Ross applies this attention to detail in the arrangements for his band as well\, exploring the timbral colors of each instrument to great effect. His compositions are rich with contrasts of sounds and textures\, and are enhanced through masterful use of dynamics and unexpected parings of instruments. \n  \nThe sound of Good Vibes is unmistakably modern; it is a “new thing” produced by young\, virtuoso performers who are currently at the epicenter of New York’s diverse scene\, actively creating the music that defines “cutting edge\,” irrespective of labels. Will Layman\, of PopMatters\, captures Ross’ relationship to the sounds of the current generation: “This band is sneaky. They play funk\, but it never feels like jazz-hip-hop fusion; they play rock but are never obviously sounding like\, say\, Radiohead. They have floating pop/gospel elements\, but only a few\, and for all the tricky playing with time\, there is nothing off-putting or new-music-y or studied about the feel. It is also sneaking in the way the superb group interplay makes you realize that you haven’t heard\, perhaps\, quite enough of the leader.” \nThis year each concert will have both a limited in-person audience as well as a livestream component. SUMMARY:Big Band Scholarship Fundraiser Dance Gala with Amanda Carr
DESCRIPTION:VJC pays homage to the big band era this season\, uniting our in-house big band with critically acclaimed singer Amanda Carr. Carr became acquainted with the Great American Songbook through her parents who were both professional big band musicians in the Boston area. Carr has recorded in the U.S. and abroad\, including Australia\, England and Italy where she appeared as a headline artist at EuroJazz Festival. Twice a feature story by respected writer/author Nat Hentoff in The Wall Street Journal\, Carr was hailed by him as “…a true jazz singer in a time of wannabes”. Ms. Carr has appeared as guest vocalist with the Boston Pops\, the Artie Shaw Orchestra\, the Harry James Band and the Glenn Miller Orchestra to name a few. The VJC Big Band is led by musical director Rob Freeberg. This year the big band celebrates 18 years of performances thanks in great part to band manager Sherm Fox’s continued persistence and organizational efforts. SUMMARY:Jay Clayton's 80th Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Jay Clayton has been key to the successful development of the Vermont Jazz Center’s vocal program. Dearly loved by her students\, she combines a deep knowledge of the music with compassion for all. She swings like crazy\, engenders the perfect emotion while singing a ballad\, and has us on the edge of our chairs when creating on-the-spot improvisations\, oftentimes including her original poetry. Downbeat Magazine says “her musicianship is impeccable;” that’s one of the reasons why she attracts such stellar support both on-stage and on-record. Clayton has 21 albums out as a leader/co-leader featuring pianists Stanley Cowell\, Fred Hersch\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, and George Cables. A sample of other world-class musicians she has recorded with include Steve Reich\, Jane Ira Bloom\, John Cage\, Norma Winstone\, Houston Person\, Gary Peacock\, Jerry Granelli and Bobby McFerrin. Clayton co-teaches the VJC’s Summer Jazz Workshop with Sheila Jordan and shares her wisdom online during the pandemic. \nThe Jazz Center is grateful that Jay Clayton has chosen the VJC as the site to celebrate her 80th birthday. For this performance she will be joined by pianist Ray Gallon along with Jay Leonhart (b) and Billy Drummond (d). \nThis year each concert will have both a limited in-person audience as well as a livestream component. SUMMARY:Bernstein/Goldings/Stewart Organ Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Goldings/Bernstein/Steward Organ Trio have been called “one of current jazz’s finest small groups” by JazzTimes magazine and “the longest-lived and most virtuosic organ trio in existence” by SFJazz. Together now for thirty years\, they have recorded over a dozen albums and performed hundreds of concerts in festivals in celebrated venues around the world. Their grooving repertoire celebrates the funky sounds of the organ trio; influences include Larry Young\, Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff. But they are unique – this trio stands out due to their brilliant musicianship\, their ability to play difficult music and have it sound easy\, and their commitment to the groove no matter what the tempo or style. One of the advantages of playing together for over three decades is the organic assimilation of a collective\, community-created vocabulary that manifests in an ESP-like understanding of where the music itself wants to go. While experiencing this band live\, listeners can watch as the performance carries the musicians in its own wake. Because the organist and drummer worked with Maceo Parker for a year\, they really know how to lay it down and get funky. Come experience a legendary trio that bursts with talent\, creativity and beauty. \nThis year each concert will have both a limited in-person audience as well as a livestream component. The pallbearers at his funeral included Robert F. Kennedy\, Frank Sinatra\, Count Basie\, Johnny Mathis and Sammy Davis Jr.. He was the first African American to host his own radio program (1946) and TV show (1956) in the US. But really\, Cole’s biggest legacy are the recordings he left : “Mona Lisa\,” “Unforgettable\,” “ L-O-V-E\,” “The Christmas Song\,” “Route 66\,” “Nature Boy\,” “Sweet Loraine.” \nExpressing Cole’s music\, using many of the big band arrangements prepared for Cole himself\, will be vocalist\, Peter Eldridge who has performed in some of the world’s most preeminent venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall\, Avery Fisher Hall\, and the Kennedy Center. As a member of New York Voices\, Eldridge is a two-time Grammy-award winner. His original music has been covered by artists such as Nancy Wilson\, Paquito D’Rivera\, and Jane Monheit. \nThe VJC Big Band was originally a collaborative project initiated by former VJC board president Howard Brofsky and board member\, Sherm Fox. SUMMARY:Immanuel Wilkins Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Jazz Center is pleased to complete its 2020-21 livestream season with a concert by the highly acclaimed Immanuel Wilkins Quartet on June 5th\, 2021. This young group\, each of whom is in their early to mid-twenties\, has been touring\, recording and creating together since their teens and has been a solid\, performing ensemble for four years. The musicians are Immanuel Wilkins (compositions and alto saxophone)\, Micah Thomas (piano)\, Daryl Johns (bass) and Kweku Sumbry (drums). \nThe Immanuel Wilkins Quartet’s debut record\, Omega\, released on Blue Note and produced by Jason Moran\, has received numerous “best of” awards including NPR’s Best Debut Jazz Album of 2020 and it also topped the New York Times’ Best Jazz Albums of 2020. Other accolades showered upon Wilkins include Best New Talent of 2020 by Musica Jazz. And a LetterOne Rising Stars Jazz Award. \nIn a recent Zoom interview with jazz blogger Marty Duda\, Wilkins discussed the premise of his new recording\, Omega. He said that he was trying to come up with an audible representation of what Black identity sounds like to him. He said that as a Black man he experiences two tiers of existence simultaneously\, one that is made up of “super-horrific material\, that is terribly graphic and explicit\,” and another Black experience that is “super-hilarious\, sublime and beautiful.” He explained\, “our everyday lives deal with both tiers in conjunction with each other. So I’m trying to create music that audibly sounds like that. It’s audibly grotesque but also really beautiful\, sublime and heavenly.” The name of the album and the names of all the compositions reflect this theme. For example\, the album’s title\, Omega\, literally means “the end.” Wilkins says he is using the word Omega as a metaphor to represent “the end of an era.” He asks “what does the end of police brutality look like\, the end of prejudice\, the end of racial oppression? What does true liberation look like?” This dichotomy of experiences is explored in Wilkins’ work which revolves upon the contrasts of beauty and pain\, love and injustice that he experiences as a Black man. \nIn past years\, our concerts happen “live” and in person and are valued at $40 per ticket. This year\, with live streaming\, we are relying on donations to offset costs.  Please give generously and support live music. \n

SUMMARY:Jeremy Pelt
DESCRIPTION:The pieces included in this performance are from Jeremy Pelt’s new record: “Griot\, This is Important.” The musical compositions were inspired by conversations with other jazz luminaries\, short sections will be interspersed throughout the concert. Pelt’s website states: “It is only natural that Jeremy Pelt’s voracious curiosity would lead him to investigate the West African Griot tradition where stories\, reminiscences and accomplishments from times past are handed down as oral histories.” \nJeremy Pelt is one of the finest jazz trumpeters of his generation; he has been compared favorably to Freddie Hubbard\, Lee Morgan\, Woody Shaw and Miles Davis. Nate Chinen of the New York Times sums up his abilities in a simple phrase: “Mr. Pelt plays brilliantly with warmth and depth.” Pelt’s numerous albums as a leader and sideman reveal his ease in playing over burning tempos and his delight in grooving over a visceral\, swinging beat or taking his time on a saucy blues. Furthermore\, Pelt is an accomplished composer and arranger – his original compositions convey unpretentious yet complex harmonic choices that complement the natural cadences of his melodies\, resulting in song forms of enigmatic beauty. \nThe VJC is grateful for the generosity of long-term supporters David Salzberg and Elissa Barr who are this concert’s sponsors.  The VJC would also like to thank CouchMusic.Live for assisting us in cross streaming and publicizing this event. \nIn past years\, our concerts happen “live” and in person and are valued at $40 per ticket. SUMMARY:Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Drummer\, composer\, bandleader\, and entrepreneur Jonathan Barber has an ambitious image of his desired future clearly mapped out. He knows from experience the tasks he will need to master in order to create the reality he envisions. Barber knows the secret to conceiving and realizing his dreams\, like touring with Pat Metheny and recording with Jeremy Pelt: planning\, hard work\, networking and talent. That’s the reason why his band is called Vision Ahead. As he said in an interview on Bernie’s Bootleg Podcast: you’ve got to set goals and give yourself reminders about the goals. Don’t just write them down and forget about them. Review them and figure out how to achieve those goals. The process is subject to change\, but at least it gives you an idea on how to work towards them. Set goals\, be patient\, be a good person.” This simple recipe is how he leads his group\, a forward-thinking quintet of individuals who have lived together and played so many gigs that they can read each others’ musical minds. Their music is a beautiful balance of contradictions – complex and accessible\, uber-tight yet open-ended\, reflective and dance-inducing. Their quest is to perpetuate the deep grooves and compelling melodies imagined by their creative leader\, but it’s also to catch the public’s eye and get gigs around the world in prestigious clubs and festivals. According to Barber’s website\, “Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel\, rock\, soul\, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Even when they’re playing hard—and they do reach some thrilling crescendos—this extremely dynamic band always feels impeccably sharp and in control.” \nJonathan Barber is a 31 year-old drummer who has been working as a sideman with Pat Metheny\, Kenny Barron\, Jeremy Pelt\, Buster Williams and Wallace Roney. Now on his third album as a leader\, Barber was touring the world with his quintet when Covid-19 intervened. He will be performing at the Vermont Jazz Center with the band that appears on all three of his records. \n  \nThe VJC would like to thank CouchMusic.Live for assisting us in cross streaming and publicizing this event. \n  \nIn past years\, our concerts happen “live” and in person and are valued at $40 per ticket. SUMMARY:The Emmet Cohen Trio with Special Guest Mark Whitfield
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Jazz Center is excited to present a live stream concert with pianist Emmet Cohen\, his working trio and special guest guitarist\, Mark Whitfield. Mark Whitfield’s guitar playing is influenced by his years with organists Jimmy Smith and Brother Jack McDuff; he has appeared on over 200 recordings as a sideman and released 12 as a leader.  A concert with Cohen and Whitfield promises to be swinging\, funky and soulful\, with reverence for the tradition and an eye towards the future. \nIn past years\, our concerts happen “live” and in person and are valued at $40 per ticket. SUMMARY:DAY 2: Third Annual Emerging Artist Festival
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 21\, 2020\nAlto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin won the 2019 Downbeat Critic’s Poll Rising Star Award as well as the Jazz Journalist’s Award for Up and Coming Jazz Musician of the Year. She recently recorded Pursuance\, a tribute to the Coltranes (Alice and John) which was produced by her “god father” and mentor Reggie Workman (who also served as John Coltrane’s bassist). The sublime character of that recording is not that it is merely a tribute to Coltrane\, but that she captures the spirit\, the fire and the essence of their music\, channeling their authentic tradition while infusing it with young energy and influences. Benjamin will be performing material from this recording in a pre-filmed\, exclusive-content concert at the VJC. She says “Our job is to heal and spread joy throughout the planet. That’s the reason I play music.”\nA new highlight for this year’s festival is the presentation of 5-minute videos from college\, high school and youth jazz ensembles. We will present videos from approximately ten student groups performing in situations that reflect the creativity of working within the limits of social distancing.\n  \n7:00 pm Pre-Concert Feature:  Short Videos from High Schools & Colleges\n\nFlynn Center Combos – Flynntones Jazz Orchestra\, Tom Cleary\, Director: Low Tide (Elmo Hope)/Hot Fun in the Summertime (Sly Stone)\nThe Kinetic Four\, UMass\, Amherst– Amherst\, MA; Jeff Holmes\, Director:  Stop This Train – (John Mayer\, Joshua Redman\, Arr.)\nHarwood Assembly Band\, Harwood Union High School – Moretown\, VT; Bruce Sklar\, Director:  Colors -The Black Pumas (Eric Burton\, Adrian Quesada)\n\n  \n7:15 pm Live Zoom Conversation\nLakecia Benjamin and Reggie Workman come together to discuss her recent project dedicated to the music and profound influences of Alice and John Coltrane.  Eugene Uman moderates. \n8:00 pm Concert: Lakecia Benjamin Quartet (VJC website only)\nOpening Video – The Groovy Truth Jazz Ensemble\, PVPA-Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School; Frank Newton\, Director:  The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing (Irving Berlin) \nConcert: Exclusive footage of concert filmed in NYC with Benjamin on alto saxophone\, Zaccai Curtis\, piano; Lonnie Plaxico\, bass; EJ Strickland\, drums. SUMMARY:Vincent Herring: A Tribute to Charlie Parker
DESCRIPTION:Vincent Herring is one of the most formidable alto saxophonists on the scene today. He came up modeling his style after that of Cannonball Adderley and was so convincing that Nat Adderley asked Vincent to join his band. As a young man he went on to play with Cedar Walton\, Horace Silver\, Freddie Hubbard\, Art Blakey and many others. Now\, a seasoned musician with 20 albums out as a leader and over 250 as a sideman\, Herring is a mentor to many: he teaches at William Paterson University and Manhattan School of Music and holds court at Smoke\, a jazz club located on NYC’s Upper West Side. \nPerforming with Herring at the VJC are three of the top jazz players in New York. For years\, these four\, top-tier musicians have come together as collaborators in each other’s projects. Their familiarity with the bebop repertoire and each other’s nuances will result in an evening honoring Bird’s tremendous legacy. \n“I want people to think of the music and not the distorted picture that’s often painted of Charlie Parker. Here it is: his 100th birthday and we’re still celebrating and studying and being inspired by his music. There are a lot of great players but few innovators. Bird was a real innovator.” – Vincent Herring\, Smoke Sessions Records \nIn past years\, our concerts happen “live” and in person and are valued at $40 per ticket. This year\, with live streaming\, we are relying on donations to offset costs.  Please give generously and support live music. \n

SUMMARY:VJC 7 & Special Guest Wanda Houston
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED TO SUNDAY AUGUST 30th @6 PM\nPresented by Brattleboro Music Center\nThe Brattleboro Music Center (BMC) will be hosting two events on August 28 and 29 at 6:00 PM at the Harris Hill Ski Jump in Brattleboro building off of last summer’s wildly successful “Music under the Stars” series which was named one of Vermont’s Top Ten Summer Events. A throwback to the 1950’s\, drive-in concerts are turning out to be this summer’s entertainment salvation\, delighting audiences in big cities like Chicago and Los Angeles\, and now\, Brattleboro! \nThe first concert will take place Friday\, August 28th and will feature the BMC Pops Orchestra under the baton of conductor Zon Eastes. The second event\, on August 29th will present seven members of the Vermont Jazz Center (VJC) Big Band with special guest Wanda Houston.  Both concerts will start at 6:00 PM. \nThe VJC 7\, featuring vocalist Wanda Houston\, is an octet made up of members of the 17-piece Vermont Jazz Center Big Band. It utilizes the “band within a band model” made popular by Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw: a large band pared down to a smaller group that focuses less on arrangements and more on improvisation. The front line of the VJC 7 is comprised of Rob Freeberg (trumpet and Music Director)\, Michael Zsoldos (tenor & alto saxophones)\, Sherm Fox (baritone saxophone)\, and John Wheeler (trombone). The rhythm section is by Eugene Uman (piano)\, David Picchi (bass) and Steve Rice (drums). \nThe featured vocalist is Wanda Houston\, who has led an active career as an actress\, performing on the grand stages of Los Angeles\, Las Vegas and Broadway; she toured Europe as the wicked stepsister in “Sisterella” (for which NAACP awarded her “Best Supporting Actress in a Musical”) and has held lead roles in “Ain’t Misbehavin’\,” “Hello Dolly” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” She has shared the stage with Oleta Adams\, Patti Austin\, Eartha Kitt\, Liza Minelli\, Pattie Labelle\, Joe Cocker\, Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand. \nAdvance reservations are required. CLICK HERE for reservations.  You will be assigned a space for your vehicle as well as the adjacent space for outdoor seating. No walk-ins will be allowed.

SUMMARY:2020 Zoom into Jazz Livestream Concert
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, August 14th at 7:00 PM\, the Vermont Jazz Center welcomes an all-star trio to wrap-up its annual Summer Jazz Workshop. Two faculty members\, pianist Helen Sung and bassist Marcus McLaurine\, will be joined by special guest saxophonist\, Steve Wilson. The three will perform a set of solos\, duos and trios that will be live streamed from Sung’s home studio. \nBassist McLaurine and Helen Sung first met in 1997 when he was touring as bassist for the legendary trumpeter\, Clark Terry. She was a graduate student at the Thelonious Monk institute where Clark Terry was a guest instructor. Sung sat in with the band and later recorded two albums as featured pianist. McLaurine got to know Steve Wilson when the two were members of former Basie trombonist\, Grover Mitchell Big Band. \nOne of the beauties of playing jazz music is the common language that is shared by musicians throughout the world. The ability to play familiar tunes together gets even deeper when others perform\, interpret and improvise over each other’s original compositions. McLaurine was happy that the trio will be playing “Ivar\,” one of his compositions that was written for his godson (Ravi)\, the son of famed trombonist\, Clifford Adams. \nSteve Wilson is regarded as one of the finest saxophonists on the scene today. The New York Times claims that he is “among the best New York jazz has to offer.” He is perhaps best known for his work with Chick Corea\, but he has also recorded with Dave Holland\, Dianne Reeves\, Charlie Byrd\, Donald Brown\, Kevin Hays\, Kevin Mahogany\, Bruce Barth\, Dave Liebman\, Louie Bellson\, Marvin “Smitty” Smith\, Don Byron\, Geoff Keezer and many others. He has performed at the VJC with his quartet and as a duo with drummer\, Lewis Nash. \nAs the daughter of Chinese immigrants raised in Houston\, Texas\, Helen Sung embodies two diverse cultures and has discovered a musical voice and identity that are true to both – and more importantly\, true to herself. Initially a student of the Western Classical tradition (she holds a Masters in classical piano performance from the University of Texas)\, Sung says her first connection to jazz “felt like an emancipation.” She was accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance in its 1995 inaugural year\, where she studied with Ron Carter\, Jimmy Heath\, and Sir Roland Hanna. Her student ensemble toured with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Upon graduation from the program\, Sung began to garner awards while performing and recording with some of the top musicians in the field\, including Clark Terry\, Louis Bellson\, Steve Turre\, Regina Carter\, T.S. Monk\, and the Mingus Dynasty Band. She has toured as a Jazz Ambassador with the US State Department. Sung has released six albums as a leader and has appeared on over sixty recordings as a side-woman. Her latest project\, Sung with Words\, is a composition and performance effort supported by Chamber Music America and a collaboration with former US Poet Laureate Dana Gioia. Sung performed this work at the VJC in March 2019 with an all-star ensemble. \nBassist-composer\, Marcus McLaurine has shared the bandstand with Dizzy Gillespie\, Melba Liston\, Kenny Burrell\, James Moody\, Lou Donaldson\, Dame Cleo Laine\, Joe Williams\, Jon Hendricks\, Abbey Lincoln\, and the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones. McLaurine was a member of Clark Terry’s quintet for over thirty years. \nVermont Jazz Center presents Helen Sung and Marcus McLaurine with special Steve Wilson on Friday\, August 14th at 7:00 PM via live stream on the VJC’s Facebook page and website\, www.vtjazz.org. The VJC is grateful for the ongoing support from the Vermont Arts Council\, the Vermont Humanities Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and National Endowment for the Humanties. \nThe in-person ticketed prices of VJC concerts are sliding scale $20-$40. Online listeners are asked to donate generously to support the presentation of this concert if they are able. Donations can be made at www.vtjazz.org. \nContact: Eugene Uman – eugene@vtjazz.org \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Eugene Uman’s Convergence Quartet
DESCRIPTION:This event will be live streamed on our homepage and on Facebook. It will be preceded by a pre-recorded interview with New England Public Radio host and jazz blogger\, Tom Reney \nEugene Uman is the director of the Vermont Jazz Center and performs as a pianist in numerous projects. His June concert is a representation of a year’s worth of composing and collaborating with various musicians and an opportunity for him to assemble a band that manifests his vision and unites his musical influences. He will be performing with vocalist Wanda Houston\, bassist David Picchi and drummer Jon Fisher. Uman’s energetic playing and writing style is flavored with the Latin rhythms that he has absorbed during his tenure living in Colombia where he initiated the jazz studies programs at la Universidad de EAFIT and el Colegio de Música de Medellín. Several of his compositions employ forms and grooves adapted from Colombian music such as cumbia\, pasillo\, puya\, bambuco\, and currulao. They are also strongly influenced by his bebop mentors: Sheila Jordan\, Howard Brofsky\, Mike Longo and Jimmy Heath as well as by the sounds of his youth when he played in rock and blues bands. Uman’s compositions draw from a vocabulary of modern jazz\, hard bop\, rock\, soul\, Latin American rhythms and gospel; listeners can expect a “convergence” of the music he loves in a mash-up of styles where groove is king. \n  \nThe VJC is grateful for the ongoing support from the Vermont Arts Council\, the Vermont Humanities Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and National Endowment for the Humanties.

SUMMARY:Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science
DESCRIPTION:2-Day Livestream Event\nclick here to view the Livestream (VJC homepage) \nGrammy-Award Winning Drummer and Founder of Berklee’s Jazz and Gender Justice Institute\, Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science\nThree-time Grammy award winner Terri Lyne Carrington grew up in a musical family – her first set of drums belonged to her grandfather who was Fats Waller’s drummer. A true protégé\, she received a full scholarship to Berklee School of Music at age 11 where she was mentored by the legendary Jack DeJohnette. After Berklee\, Carrington’s talent\, ability and work ethic have earned her recognition as one of the most formidable musicians on the scene today. Carrington received an honorary doctorate at Berklee in 2003 and was appointed professor there in 2007. She now holds the Zildjian Chair in Performance and teaches at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Carrington toured with Herbie Hancock between 1997 and 2007 and has performed with the top musicians in the jazz world including Wayne Shorter\, Al Jarreau\, Stan Getz\, David Sanborn\, Joe Sample\, Cassandra Wilson\, Clark Terry\, and Dianne Reeves. \nCarrington’s extensive recording career includes several albums she released as a leader\, including The Mosaic Project\, for which she won a Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Album\, and Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue\, for which she won a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album—becoming the first woman ever to win a Grammy in this category. Her recording credits include work with Carlos Santana\, John Scofield\, Terence Blanchard\, Dianne Reeves\, George Duke\, Nancy Wilson\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Geri Allen\, among many others. \nSchedule of Events\nSaturday May 23rd\, 8:00 pm\n\nPerformance\nPremiere of new music videos\nDiscussion and Q&A\n\nTerri Lyne Carrington and Social Science’s scheduled performance at the Jazz Center meets the challenges of our times by embracing technology; they will be expanding the event to include enhanced educational and communicative opportunities. The event kicks off at 8:00 PM on Saturday\, May 23rd. The first hour will be a debut presentation of three videos of tunes from their recent recording. These videos will be recorded beforehand in the individual studios of each of the six musicians; their videographer will then craft the six layers\, combining and editing each of the musical performances\, into a unified whole. They will do this for each of the three tunes. After streaming these three videos\, the group will come together\, along with renowned activist Susan Rosenberg\, in a Zoom panel discussion which will be moderated by Downbeat correspondent John Murph and VJC Director Eugene Uman. Together they will discuss the videos\, the salient points and lessons learned; they will give advice on how we as a concerned community can move forward as doers rather than followers. \nWhile the first half of Saturday’s offering reflects the first\, structured portion of their recent recording\, Waiting Game\, the second hour will begin with two open\, improvised pieces. This reflects the second portion of their album: a four part\, freely improvised suite called “Dreams and Desperate Measures.” As Carrington said in the Berklee interview\, “my goal was to go in to the studio and play for an hour without stopping\, with no direction and to not do it twice – people are so used to hearing messages verbally that there’s not enough room left for the imagination.” Aaron Parks added “yes\, there are many things that we’re against that we’re protesting. But there are also many things that we’re for: the idea of leaving room for each other\, letting others take the lead\, listening to each other and creating something together\, that’s democracy in action.” For the Jazz Center’s livestream performance\, the group will be dealing with the limits of latency (the delay that exists when communicating over the internet) because all the musicians will be performing from their own personal practice spaces spanning locations from Boston to Seattle. Carrington seems unfazed\, or perhaps intrigued by the possibilities. In a recent phone call she said that\, in this context\, they will approach the freely improvised segment more like a conversation than a groove-based piece. All six of the band members will be featured in two separate offerings of about 10 minutes each. After the performance\, the group will meet in a Zoom chat\, moderated by VJC Director\, Eugene Uman\, to discuss the experience. \nSunday May 24th\, 2:00 – 5:00 pm\n\nMasterclasses w/ audience Q&A\nDiscussion of their work\n\n2:00 – 2:45 pm     Terri Lyne Carrington & Kassa Overall:  “Rhythm\, Textures and Space with Drums and Electronics” – Importance of rhythmic foundation\, role of drummer\, genre/style overlaps\, new jazz\, incorporating electronics with live band: groove\, space and time\, mind and body; drummers as producers\, writers\, lyricists\, vocalists. \n3:00 – 3:45 pm     Aaron Parks & Debo Ray: “Intention and Communication” – Empathetic embodiment\, drawing from personal experience; conjoining the meaning of words with melodic choices; listening and communicating in the moment; piano and voice; singing and playing the notes\, conjuring and transmitting feeling. \n4:00 – 4:45 pm    Matthew Stevens & Morgan Guerin : “Collaboration: Becoming greater than the sum of our parts” – Co-writing; hearing and being heard; forming a collective artistic identity; synthesizing multiple perspectives/ideas through a group prism; putting ego\, developing trust and humility. \n  \nThe VJC is grateful for the ongoing support from the Vermont Arts Council\, the Vermont Humanities Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and National Endowment for the Humanties.
