DESCRIPTION:From the church to the conservatory to jazz festivals worldwide\, Cyrus Chestnut is one of the most soul-satisfying pianists on the scene. He transmits transcendent joy to the audience at every opportunity. Perhaps this is because of his deep connection to spirit: “I believe the ability to play music is a gift from God and every time I play\, I’m thankful. Every time I sit down to play\, for me\, is worship and expression\,” he told DownBeat magazine. As a result his music is filled with both the fire and the peace of the Black church. In an interview with NPR he affirmed that recurring theme when asked about how the church affected his playing: “At any given time if you can hear a gospel riff\, it’s just who I am…it’s in my DNA. The church is in my DNA. I think now I have a much deeper passion to simply be able to play\, and so it’s all there. It’s all there – it’s always been there and will always be there.” The confidence and beauty that Chestnut projects has been recognized by myriad legends who have asked him to join their recording projects including Betty Carter\, Little Jimmy Scott\, Carl Allen\, Wynton Marsalis\, James Carter\, Freddie Cole\, Kevin Mahogany\, Dee Dee Bridgewater and many others. And the critics love him too – The Guardian claims his performance on his latest album is “like Oscar Peterson in his heyday.”

SUMMARY:Dayramir González Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pianist “Dayramir González can be added to the pantheon of distinctive Cuban jazz voices… setting the Latin jazz world on fire in America” (Carnegie Hall). This “stunningly gifted pianist” has been cited as one of the few Cuban jazz artists “rescuing the danzón and reinventing the genre on the basis of diverse constructions of identity” (Wall Street Journal). González’ music fuses urban Latin music while honoring traditional structures. He is a classically trained musician who studied initially with Chucho Valdes’s sister\, Mayra Caridad Valdés\, and then continued in the esteemed Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte de Cuba\, earning his “monster technique” by fortifying his given talent with hours of practice in classical studies. At the age of 16\, González joined former Irakere member\, Oscar Valdes’ Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble Diákara\, and immersed himself in Timba music at the highest level. González has twice won first place in Havana’s JoJazz Festival and earned three Cubadisco Awards\, considered the Grammys of Cuba. He attended Berklee College of music as the first Cuban national “Presidential Scholar” and has joined the Carnegie Hall Stage with other Cuban legends like Chucho and Bebo Valdes as one of the representatives of the up-and-coming generation of Afro-Cuban jazz pianists.

This concert will be divided into two sections\, the first will start at 3:30 PM and the second show will resume after a dinner break at 8:00 PM.  Singers will be accompanied by a professional jazz trio and the piano trios will be assisted and perform with a faculty bassist.  Also performing will be five faculty-coached ensembles\, usually comprised of two or three horns\, piano\, bass and drums.  A $5.00 donation is suggested\, no reservations required.

DESCRIPTION:Music Under the Stars\nPresented by BMC and Retreat Farm\n  \nThe Vermont Jazz Center’s Big Band will play Saturday\, July 22nd at 6:30 PM; rain date will be July 23rd at 6:30. This year the band will feature vocalist Mark Anagnostopulos in a tribute to one of America’s most important composers\, Duke Edward Kennedy Ellington. \n \nDuke Ellington’s music is widely loved; a small portion of his immense catalog are jazz standards\, performed by jazz bands around the world. But Ellington’s imprint goes way deeper –his impact on the history of modern music cannot be overemphasized. According to music historian Gunther Schuller Ellington was “the most significant composer of his genre.” Some of Ellington’s more familiar compositions include “Satin Doll\,” “Do Nothing ‘till You Hear From Me\,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing\, if it Ain’t Got that Swing\,” and “Mood Indigo.” He also composed major symphonic works\, movie soundtracks\, music for ballet and opera\, and three sacred concerts. \nThe VJC Big Band is a group of area music-professionals that has was formed in 2005 by the late Howard Brofsky and band manager Sherm Fox. Trumpeter Rob Freeberg has been the band’s music director since 2013. Members of the VJC Big band performing at this concert will be guest vocalist\, Mark Anagnostopulos; trumpeters Don Anderson\, Rick Anderson\, Haneef Nelson and Rob Freeberg; woodwind players Michael Zsoldos\, Sherm Fox\, Matt Steckler\, Carl Clements\, and Donna Morse; trombonists Tim Atherton\, Dave Sporny and Amaranth Cole; and rhythm section members Eugene Uman (piano)\, Wes Brown (bass)\, and Steve Rice (drums).

SUMMARY:Convergence Project 2023
DESCRIPTION:In-person and livestreamed event \nEugene Uman is the director of the Vermont Jazz Center and performs as a pianist in numerous projects. His annual June concert is a representation of a year’s worth of composing and collaborating with various musicians and an opportunity for him to assemble a dream band that manifests his vision and unites his musical influences. Uman’s energetic playing and writing style is flavored with the Latin rhythms that he has absorbed during his tenure living in Colombia where he initiated the jazz studies programs at la Universidad de EAFIT and el Colegio de Música de Medellín. Several of his compositions employ forms and grooves adapted from Colombian music such as cumbia\, pasillo\, puya\, bambuco\, and currulao. They are also strongly influenced by his bebop mentors: Sheila Jordan\, Howard Brofsky\, Mike Longo and Jimmy Heath as well as by the sounds of his youth when he played in rock and blues bands. Uman’s compositions draw from a vocabulary of modern jazz\, hard bop\, rock\, soul\, Latin American rhythms and gospel; listeners can expect a “convergence” of the music he loves in a mash-up of styles where groove is king. \nMasks optional\, light refreshment available. \nDonate to the Livestream

SUMMARY:Renee Rosnes & Bill Charlap
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event\, there will NOT be a livestream. \nPianists Renee Rosnes and Bill Charlap are married and completely devoted to their individual paths in music. Both are currently touring their most recent releases: The Bill Charlap Trio: Street of Dreams (Blue Note)\, and Renee Rosnes: Kinds of Love (Smoke Sessions). Rosnes also leads the supergroup ARTEMIS\, which features Ingrid Jensen\, Nicole Glover\, Alexa Tarantino\, Nicole Ueda and Allison Miller. The band’s second release\, In Real Time (Blue Note) will be released May 5\, 2023. Rosnes also tours and records with legendary bassist Ron Carter’s Foursight Quartet. Charlap’s trio schedule takes him around the world\, and he is the artistic director of 92NY’s Jazz in July Festival. Because Rosnes and Charlap are so busy as solo artists\, their duo performances are rare and celebrated. \nRosnes and Charlap released their debut album\, Double Portrait (Blue Note) in 2010. The Globe and Mail observed\, “…that the two are husband and wife makes this session extra special. Both are exceptional players\, matching flawless technique with effortless lyricism\, and their playing intermingles beautifully\, with one phrase sparking another and ideas bouncing from soloist to accompanist and back.” \nA review in MMusic Magazine noted that\, “Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes are not like most couples. By the time they married in 2007\, each was already a world-renowned jazz pianist with an impressive discography and a packed touring itinerary. The living room of their home is taken up mostly by two Steinway grands.” In discussing their approach to duo play\, Charlap mused\, “We don’t alter our playing styles for each other\, we just listen and react. The result is a new entity comprised of both our voices.” Rosnes adds\, “Certainly we have distinct styles\, but a great deal of common ground existed before we ever sat down to play together. Being married\, I believe there is also an intimate spirit that naturally comes through in the music.” \nThis concert promises a rare opportunity for viewers/listeners to experience a collaborative journey of two artists at the top of their game. The Latin Jazz Ensemble will then play danceable grooves from Colombia\, Brazil and Cuba. The Samba Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Julian Gerstin and Ron Kelley will play a medley of percussion pieces of Brazilian origin. The Soubrette Jazz Choir will perform Anna Patton’s beautifully harmonized\, smart and quirky arrangements. Draa Hobbs will then lead two guitar ensembles. The VJC Sextet\, led by Rob Freeberg\, is a group of area musicians who come together once a week to rehearse carefully harmonized three-horn arrangements. Claire Arenius’ two Blue Note Ensembles will perform music made famous on the signature jazz record label: Blue Note Records.

Her most recent recording\, Aventurine\, is a double quartet album featuring a string quartet and the vocal group Invenio.  She is an IAJE Sister in Jazz scholar\, a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Bass competition\, a recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award\, has written for large and small ensembles\, and composed music for film. The omnipresent drummer has appeared on over 150 recordings with jazz’s revered luminaries; his sixth album as a leader was released by Blue Note in 2021. Side-people on Blake’s recordings have included Robert Glasper\, Tom Harrell\, Chris Potter\, Linda May Han Oh\, Mark Turner and others. Downbeat calls his work “a celebration of life and legacy\, bursting with exuberance and lighthearted energy.” \nHeralded by NPR Music as “the ultimate modernist\,” Blake has recorded with the Mingus Big Band\, Dave Holland\, Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Tom Harrell\, Hans Glawischnig\, Avishai Cohen\, Donny McCaslin\, Linda May Han Oh\, Jaleel Shaw\, Chris Potter\, Maria Schneider\, Alex Sipiagin\, Kris Davis\, Roy Hargrove\, Russell Malone and countless other distinctive voices. DESCRIPTION:Courses begin the week of February 12th and include Youth Jazz Ensemble led by Eugene Uman\, Anna Patton‘s Soubrette Choir\, Latin Jazz Ensemble with Julian Gerstin and Eugene Uman\, two levels of Claire Arenius’ Blue Note Ensemble (level 1\, level 2)\, two levels of Jazz Guitar Ensemble (level 1\, level 2) with Draa Hobbs\, and a Samba Percussion Ensemble led by Julian Gerstin and Ron Kelley. Online courses include Jazz Social Justice with Haneef Nelson\, The Art of Rhythm with Brian Shankar Adler\, and Jazz and Spirituality with Claire Arenius. \nJoin a combo or chorus and get involved with performing while being guided by one of the VJC’s professional faculty members. If you’ve never improvised\, that’s no problem. There are opportunities for all\, including for classical musicians intrigued by jazz’s structure and improvisational opportunities. \nOn Sunday\, April 30th\, 2023\, we will join educational and concert venues in 190 countries around the world in celebrating International Jazz Day by presenting our end-of-semester Student Showcase concert at 2:00 pm. We will be “promoting Jazz Day’s universal message of peace\, respect\, and dialogue.” The concert will take place at the Center’s performance space at Cotton Mill Hill in Brattleboro\, VT. \nSessions are 10 weeks long\, excepting the Youth Jazz Ensemble which meets for eight sessions\, the Soubrette Choir which meets for twelve\, and the Samba Percussion Ensemble which meets for six.

SUMMARY:Mingus Dynasty
DESCRIPTION:VJC Celebrates Charles Mingus’ centennial birthday anniversary with a “nimble and expert” touring group made up of charter members of the Mingus Orchestra. The band was initially formed by Sue Mingus (Charles’ widow) in 1979\, just after Charles Mingus’ death to feature his repertoire and support the musicians he recorded or played with. The group was named after the 1959 album Mingus Dynasty. This concert will further shine a light on Sue Mingus’ acceptance of the 2023 NEA Jazz Master award\, acknowledging her efforts in founding a non-profit honoring Charles Mingus’ legacy. The non-profit she leads employs a three-tiered structure designed to spread the word of Mingus’ repertoire including three Mingus bands (Orchestra\, Big Band and Dynasty)\, an educational division (Let My Children Hear Music)\, and an annual Mingus Music Festival. \nBecause Mingus always said he was first and foremost a composer\, and because he left behind over 300 compositions that deserved to be played\, the Mingus Dynasty band carries on his music\, vision and mission. Today\, four decades later\, the rich legacy of Mingus music ignites the bandstand encouraging new generations of musicians to add their individual voices this rich and varied musical legacy. \nA short list of the many musicians who currently perform in the Mingus Orchestra/Mingus Big Band/Dynasty include Helen Sung\, Freddie Bryant\, Orrin Evans\, Boris Koslov\, Robin Eubanks\, Philip Harper\, Alex Foster\, Sarah Hanahan\, Ron Blake\, Wayne Escoffery\, Frank Ku-umba Lacy\, Adam Cruz\, and many others. DESCRIPTION:The Music of Duke Ellington\nIn-person and livestreamed event\n(Masks are required for in-person attendance) \nThis event is the primary fundraiser for the VJC Scholarship Fund which grants an annual average of $27\,000 in scholarships to students\, offsetting fees for VJC ensembles\, private lessons and its world-renowned summer jazz workshop. \nThe VJC Big Band performs the compositions and arrangements of Duke Ellington\, hailed as “America’s greatest composer” by Jazz at Lincoln Center. This swing dance will feature the brilliant clarinet and vocal work of Evan Arntzen plus the finesse of the VJC Big Band\, now in its 19th year. \nDuke Ellington is best known for his danceable hits like Satin Doll and It Don’t Mean a Thing (if it Ain’t Got that Swing)\, but he was much more than a composer of popular music. His prolific creativity\, his visionary use of media\, and his use of art in the fight against racism have uplifted his stature to that of an American legend. Ellington composed over 3\,000 songs and performed in over 20\,000 concerts throughout the United States\, Europe\, Latin America\, Asia and Africa. His big band was one of the longest-lived of any in all of jazz history. Ellington composed familiar hits like Mood Indigo\, but he also created large-scale pieces\, including orchestral and sacred works. \nEllington is widely considered to be one of the United States’ most important composers of any musical form. He earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966\, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969\, and the Legion of Honor by France in 1973; he was posthumously awarded a special award citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board. At his funeral\, attended by over 12\,000 people at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine\, Ella Fitzgerald summed up the occasion\, “It’s a very sad day…A genius has passed.” \nThe VJC pays a swinging tribute to Ellington with a special concert featuring Evan Arntzen\, clarinetist and vocalist known for his work with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks and Catherine Russell. Polish those dancing shoes – it’s been a while!

Wilson’s musicianship was cultivated while growing up in the church in Akron\, Ohio. DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event\, there will NOT be a livestream. Masks are required. \nOne of the greatest interpreters and performers of American popular song\, Catherine Russell earned a Grammy-award as a featured artist on the soundtrack album for the HBO-TV series Boardwalk Empire. She plays music that evokes her familial heritage as jazz royalty. Russell’s father\, the late Luis Russell\, was a legendary pianist who served for many years as Louis Armstrong’s musical director. Her mother\, the late Carline Ray\, was a pioneering multi-instrumentalist who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm\, Mary Lou Williams\, and Sy Oliver. \nCatherine Russell can be heard on over 200 recordings and has toured and recorded with Steely Dan\, David Bowie\, Cyndi Lauper\, Paul Simon\, Jackson Browne\, Michael Feinstein\, Levon Helm\, Toshi Reagon and Rosanne Cash\, among others. \nWhile introducing songs for her NPR Tiny Desk concert\, Russell reminisced about her choice of material\, saying: “I am inspired by the Black\, blues-women of the 1920s\, so I do a lot of that kind of material [including] Bessie Smith\, Alberta Hunter\, Ethel Waters and so forth.” These influences shine through her interpretations of their songs and are imbued with respect\, love and truth. Russell has absorbed the magic of the jazz legends she grew up with\, and has incorporated the early blues and jazz styles so thoroughly that they have become an intrinsic part of her personality. DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Jazz Center is pleased to present on September 17th\, 2022 at 8:00 PM\, the Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet featuring Mr. Akinmusire on trumpet along with Sam Harris on piano and Tim Angulo on drums (bassist TBA). This is a live\, in-person concert with no live streaming. Because Ambrose Akinmusire lives in California and seldom tours\, this concert will be a special and rare event. The musicianship will be stellar and the quality of the experience will be sublime. This concert will be a very special\, limited experience. \nAkinmusire’s most recent album\, his fifth for Blue Note Records\, On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment\, has been nominated as Best Jazz Instrumental Album for the 2021 Grammy Awards. He is a truth-teller whose music is an expression of his personal journey as a Black man. Although he loves playing jazz standards\, he has chosen to compose original music that draws attention to the causes he feels strongly about\, especially the realities of racism. He explained: “It’s important to me to talk about the injustices that Black people experience\, and the fear that I have walking around the United States and really a lot of places in the world. In my music I am trying to express the beauty and the pain at the same time\, trying to express what is to me the most defining part: resilience.” \nStrong convictions define each of Akinmusire’s albums as a leader. His compositions and arrangements aren’t easy listening\, but they are so well-balanced that the struggles and anxiety that do emerge are part of a bigger picture that is quelled by a universal equilibrium balanced by long stretches of sensitive playing and empathetic reflection. His sound on the trumpet is unlike anyone else’s. Akinmusire masterfully bends notes up and down to make his horn sound like the melismas of a human voice. \nAkinmusire sees Black music as a continuum. He sees himself as a “channel” for its expression. One of his most striking (and perhaps controversial) realizations is that he views hip hop music as the natural evolution of Black music. It’s kind of like what I was saying about Art Blakey and gospel. Black music at the end of the day is Black music. And I would argue that I make Black music\, and therefore I make jazz\, and therefore I make gospel – and it’s all part of the same tree. You can’t rip a branch off of the same tree and plant it\, and convince everybody that what grows is a different tree\, Black music is Black music.” \nSetting up this concert has been years in the making\, but it will be worth the wait. SUMMARY:VJC Big Band - Music Under the Starts Presented by BMC & Retreat Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Jazz Center’s Big Band is delighted to once again perform as invited guests of the Brattleboro Music Center at its Music Under the Stars concert series live at the Retreat Farm in Brattleboro\, VT at 6:30 PM on Saturday\, July 23rd. This year’s celebration will feature Rebecca Holtz\, a frequent performer with the Compaq Big Band and the Keene Jazz Orchestra; Holtz also sang in the Bay Area with the SFJAZZ Monday Night Band and was highlighted in SFJAZZ’s Artists on the Rise series. Holtz studied with Sheila Jordan\, Jay Clayton\, and Peter Eldridge at the Vermont Jazz Center and has built a career in New England and the Bay Area. She has shared the stage with Samirah Evans\, Charles Neville\, and Houston Person at the Vermont Jazz Center and SFJAZZ. Some of the selections she will be singing at the Music Under the Stars performance include “When I Fall in Love\,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow\,” “Paper Moon” and many other classics. \nThe VJC Big Band is made up of The Vermont Jazz Center’s Big Band is delighted to once again perform as invited guests of the Brattleboro Music Center at its Music Under the Starsrea professional musicians who come together to enjoy the camaraderie and rich repertoire of the swing era and beyond. Each year they put together a special project featuring remarkable composers and guest artists. Over the last 18 years\, the Vermont Jazz Center has produced concerts focused on the music and often original arrangements of Terry Gibbs\, Artie Shaw\, Tito Puente\, Ella Fitzgerald; some of the guest artists who have performed with the VJC Big Band include Houston Person\, Eguie Castrillo\, Miles Griffith\, Amanda Carr\, Wanda Houston\, Peter Eldridge\, Kevin Mahogany\, Samirah Evans\, Mark Anagnostopulos\, and Rebecca Holtz. \nThe VJC Big Band is directed by VJC board member Rob Freeberg\, whose conducting draws on his respect for the jazz legacy\, an unerring ear\, and decades of experience leading his own big band in the New York City region. Freeberg moved to Dummerston\, VT in 2012\, after retiring from his position as Director of Bands at New Rochelle High School\, NY\, where he taught for 30 years. He is the musical director of the VJC Sextet and also performs with the Windham Orchestra\, its brass quintet\, the Bennington County Choral Society and the Keene Chorale. \nThe VJC Big Band celebrates 18 years of performances thanks in great part to band manager Sherm Fox’s continued persistence and organizational efforts; he is the glue that has held the band together since 2004\, taking on the chore of herding 17 jazz-cats into formation. The VJC Big Band was originally a collaborative project initiated by Fox and Howard Brofsky\, who served as VJC president and mentor for decades. \nSupporting vocalist Rebecca Holtz will be Rick Anderson\, Haneef Nelson\, Geoff Cunningham\, Ryan Kapoor\, and Rob Freeberg on trumpet; Carl Clements and Donna Morse on alto saxophone; Michael Zsoldos and Bob Stabach on tenor saxophone; Sherm Fox on baritone saxophone; John Wheeler\, Kim Clark\, Dave Sporny and Caroline Cole on trombone; Eugene Uman on piano; Wes Brown on bass; Steve Rice on drums\, and Julian Gerstin\, percussion. \nSavor the sounds of swing music. SUMMARY:Nduduzo Makhathini
DESCRIPTION:Nduduzo Makhathini grew up in the lush and rugged hill country of South Africa\, where music and ritual practices are symbiotically linked. The area is significant historically as the site of the mid-19th century Zulu kingdom where the Zulu/African warrior code evolved. Drumming\, singing and dancing are interwoven into the Zulu system/code and\, according to his press materials\, understanding this legacy gives us a window into understanding Makhathini’s own personal vision and creative process. \nIn Makhathini’s artistic world\, like in much of African culture\, there are no boundary lines drawn between creating art and living in harmony with the natural world.  His presentations are musical experiences as opposed to concerts. They are expressions of a deeper life\, a means to create shared\, intentional\, spiritual experiences where the energy of the audience is inclusive and pervasive. Makhathini has tried to capture that experience in his recent Blue Note Records debut\, Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds.  \nMusical influences for Makhathini include the venerable legends of South African jazz: Bheki Mseleku\, Moses Molelekwa\, and Abdullah Ibrahim. His mentor Mseleku\, introduced Makhathini to the music of John Coltrane’s classic quartet with McCoy Tyner. “I came to understand my voice as a pianist through John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme\,” he says. “… I had always been looking for a kind of playing that could mirror or evoke the way my people danced\, sung and spoke. Tyner provided that and still does in meaningful ways.” \nMakhathini is a member of Shabaka Hutchings’ band Shabaka and the Ancestors\, appearing on their 2016 album Wisdom of Elders. He has recorded or toured with Logan Richardson\, Nasheet Waits\, Tarus Mateen\, Stefon Harris\, Billy Harper\, Azar Lawrence\, and Ernest Dawkins. Makhathini has released eight albums a a leader: Ikhambi won Best Jazz Album at the South African Music Awards (SAMA). His Blue Note debut Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds was released in 2020 to wide critical acclaim. The New York Times naming it one of the “Best Jazz Albums of 2020” and DownBeat naming Nduduzo among their “25 for the Future” list. Letters from the Underworld also cinches a partnership between Blue Note Records and Universal Music Group Africa that has led to the creation of Blue Note Africa. Mahkhatini has performed at festivals around the world\, at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City\, and appeared as a guest with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on their 3-night musical celebration The South African Songbook. He is the head of the Jazz Studies department at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape. \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Composer and pianist Eugene Uman and the original members of the Convergence Project  return to the Vermont Jazz Center for a reunion concert performing high-energy original jazz compositions . This configuration of the Convergence project\, with the Takeishi brothers’ rhythm section\, hasn’t performed together since 2015. Uman has prepared new material and revised some old favorites in preparation for this exciting concert. \nThe leader of the Convergence Project\, Eugene Uman\, is a composer\, pianist\, and educator. He has been the Executive Artistic Director of the Vermont Jazz Center since 1997\, has worked tirelessly to connect music and the local community and has written over 200 jazz compositions\, including three that appeared on Latin Jazz star Sammy Figueroa’s 2005 Grammy Nominated CD\, In Walked Sammy. SUMMARY:George Cables Trio
DESCRIPTION:George Cables is a true jazz master\, revered by aficionados and peers alike for his inventive harmonic concepts and beautiful\, lyrical style. He will be performing in a trio setting at the jazz center with Essiet Essiet on acoustic bass and Jerome Jennings on drums. \nCables was born in New York City in 1944\, and was initially a classically trained pianist. He attended the High School of Performing Arts and then went on to study at Mannes College of Music. As a young man he was drawn to jazz and began studying and playing gigs around New York at the Top of the Gate\, Slugs\, and other venues. During that time\, he toured and recorded with the legendary drummer Max Roach. His piano can be heard on Roach’s seminal album\, Lift Every Voice and Sing. In 1969\, Cables was the pianist for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for a short time and then went on to tour with tenor titan Sonny Rollins.  Rollins took Cables to the West Coast where he took up residency. Collaborations and recordings by Mr. Cables include work with tenor saxophonists Joe Henderson\, Dexter Gordon\, Sonny Rollins\, trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. The longest standing relationship Cables developed was with alto saxophonist Art Pepper.  Cables became Pepper’s pianist of choice\, so much so that Pepper gave him the moniker “Mr. Beautiful.” Cables has recorded almost 40 albums as a leader and upwards of 200 albums as a sideman with some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time\, including Frank Morgan\, The Cookers\, Archie Shepp\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Eddie Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Art Pepper\, Dexter Gordon\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Frank Morgan\, Max Roach\, Gary Bartz\, Bud Shank\, Phil Woods\, Red Mitchell\, Woody Shaw\, Roy Haynes\, Conrad Herwig\, Seamus Blake\, Chico Freeman\, Winard Harper\, Joe Henderson\, Von Freeman\, Sonny Rollins\, John Stubblefield\, Bobby Shew\, Louis Hayes\, Ralph Lalama\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Harold Land\, Shorty Rogers\, Joe Farrell\, Kazumi Watanabe\, Curtis Fuller\, Joe Chambers\, Frank Foster\, Frank Lacy and many others. \nThis year each concert will have an in-person audience as well as a livestream component.
