SUMMARY:Jeremy Pelt
DESCRIPTION:The pieces included in this performance are from Jeremy Pelt’s new record: “Griot\, This is Important.” The musical compositions were inspired by conversations with other jazz luminaries\, short sections will be interspersed throughout the concert. Pelt’s website states: “It is only natural that Jeremy Pelt’s voracious curiosity would lead him to investigate the West African Griot tradition where stories\, reminiscences and accomplishments from times past are handed down as oral histories.” \nJeremy Pelt is one of the finest jazz trumpeters of his generation; he has been compared favorably to Freddie Hubbard\, Lee Morgan\, Woody Shaw and Miles Davis. Nate Chinen of the New York Times sums up his abilities in a simple phrase: “Mr. Pelt plays brilliantly with warmth and depth.” Pelt’s numerous albums as a leader and sideman reveal his ease in playing over burning tempos and his delight in grooving over a visceral\, swinging beat or taking his time on a saucy blues. SUMMARY:Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Drummer\, composer\, bandleader\, and entrepreneur Jonathan Barber has an ambitious image of his desired future clearly mapped out. He knows from experience the tasks he will need to master in order to create the reality he envisions. Barber knows the secret to conceiving and realizing his dreams\, like touring with Pat Metheny and recording with Jeremy Pelt: planning\, hard work\, networking and talent. That’s the reason why his band is called Vision Ahead. As he said in an interview on Bernie’s Bootleg Podcast: you’ve got to set goals and give yourself reminders about the goals. Don’t just write them down and forget about them. Review them and figure out how to achieve those goals. The process is subject to change\, but at least it gives you an idea on how to work towards them. Set goals\, be patient\, be a good person.” This simple recipe is how he leads his group\, a forward-thinking quintet of individuals who have lived together and played so many gigs that they can read each others’ musical minds. Their music is a beautiful balance of contradictions – complex and accessible\, uber-tight yet open-ended\, reflective and dance-inducing. Their quest is to perpetuate the deep grooves and compelling melodies imagined by their creative leader\, but it’s also to catch the public’s eye and get gigs around the world in prestigious clubs and festivals. According to Barber’s website\, “Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel\, rock\, soul\, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Even when they’re playing hard—and they do reach some thrilling crescendos—this extremely dynamic band always feels impeccably sharp and in control.” \nJonathan Barber is a 31 year-old drummer who has been working as a sideman with Pat Metheny\, Kenny Barron\, Jeremy Pelt\, Buster Williams and Wallace Roney. Now on his third album as a leader\, Barber was touring the world with his quintet when Covid-19 intervened. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 21\, 2020\nAlto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin won the 2019 Downbeat Critic’s Poll Rising Star Award as well as the Jazz Journalist’s Award for Up and Coming Jazz Musician of the Year. She recently recorded Pursuance\, a tribute to the Coltranes (Alice and John) which was produced by her “god father” and mentor Reggie Workman (who also served as John Coltrane’s bassist). The sublime character of that recording is not that it is merely a tribute to Coltrane\, but that she captures the spirit\, the fire and the essence of their music\, channeling their authentic tradition while infusing it with young energy and influences. Benjamin will be performing material from this recording in a pre-filmed\, exclusive-content concert at the VJC. She says “Our job is to heal and spread joy throughout the planet. That’s the reason I play music.”\nA new highlight for this year’s festival is the presentation of 5-minute videos from college\, high school and youth jazz ensembles. DESCRIPTION:Vincent Herring is one of the most formidable alto saxophonists on the scene today. He came up modeling his style after that of Cannonball Adderley and was so convincing that Nat Adderley asked Vincent to join his band. As a young man he went on to play with Cedar Walton\, Horace Silver\, Freddie Hubbard\, Art Blakey and many others. Now\, a seasoned musician with 20 albums out as a leader and over 250 as a sideman\, Herring is a mentor to many: he teaches at William Paterson University and Manhattan School of Music and holds court at Smoke\, a jazz club located on NYC’s Upper West Side. \nPerforming with Herring at the VJC are three of the top jazz players in New York. For years\, these four\, top-tier musicians have come together as collaborators in each other’s projects. DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED TO SUNDAY AUGUST 30th @6 PM\nPresented by Brattleboro Music Center\nThe Brattleboro Music Center (BMC) will be hosting two events on August 28 and 29 at 6:00 PM at the Harris Hill Ski Jump in Brattleboro building off of last summer’s wildly successful “Music under the Stars” series which was named one of Vermont’s Top Ten Summer Events. A throwback to the 1950’s\, drive-in concerts are turning out to be this summer’s entertainment salvation\, delighting audiences in big cities like Chicago and Los Angeles\, and now\, Brattleboro! \nThe first concert will take place Friday\, August 28th and will feature the BMC Pops Orchestra under the baton of conductor Zon Eastes. The second event\, on August 29th will present seven members of the Vermont Jazz Center (VJC) Big Band with special guest Wanda Houston.  Both concerts will start at 6:00 PM. \nThe VJC 7\, featuring vocalist Wanda Houston\, is an octet made up of members of the 17-piece Vermont Jazz Center Big Band. It utilizes the “band within a band model” made popular by Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw: a large band pared down to a smaller group that focuses less on arrangements and more on improvisation. The front line of the VJC 7 is comprised of Rob Freeberg (trumpet and Music Director)\, Michael Zsoldos (tenor & alto saxophones)\, Sherm Fox (baritone saxophone)\, and John Wheeler (trombone). The rhythm section is by Eugene Uman (piano)\, David Picchi (bass) and Steve Rice (drums). \nThe featured vocalist is Wanda Houston\, who has led an active career as an actress\, performing on the grand stages of Los Angeles\, Las Vegas and Broadway; she toured Europe as the wicked stepsister in “Sisterella” (for which NAACP awarded her “Best Supporting Actress in a Musical”) and has held lead roles in “Ain’t Misbehavin’\,” “Hello Dolly” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” She has shared the stage with Oleta Adams\, Patti Austin\, Eartha Kitt\, Liza Minelli\, Pattie Labelle\, Joe Cocker\, Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand. \nAdvance reservations are required. SUMMARY:2020 Zoom into Jazz Livestream Concert
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, August 14th at 7:00 PM\, the Vermont Jazz Center welcomes an all-star trio to wrap-up its annual Summer Jazz Workshop. Two faculty members\, pianist Helen Sung and bassist Marcus McLaurine\, will be joined by special guest saxophonist\, Steve Wilson. The three will perform a set of solos\, duos and trios that will be live streamed from Sung’s home studio. \nBassist McLaurine and Helen Sung first met in 1997 when he was touring as bassist for the legendary trumpeter\, Clark Terry. She was a graduate student at the Thelonious Monk institute where Clark Terry was a guest instructor. Sung sat in with the band and later recorded two albums as featured pianist. McLaurine got to know Steve Wilson when the two were members of former Basie trombonist\, Grover Mitchell Big Band. \nOne of the beauties of playing jazz music is the common language that is shared by musicians throughout the world. The ability to play familiar tunes together gets even deeper when others perform\, interpret and improvise over each other’s original compositions. McLaurine was happy that the trio will be playing “Ivar\,” one of his compositions that was written for his godson (Ravi)\, the son of famed trombonist\, Clifford Adams. \nSteve Wilson is regarded as one of the finest saxophonists on the scene today. The New York Times claims that he is “among the best New York jazz has to offer.” He is perhaps best known for his work with Chick Corea\, but he has also recorded with Dave Holland\, Dianne Reeves\, Charlie Byrd\, Donald Brown\, Kevin Hays\, Kevin Mahogany\, Bruce Barth\, Dave Liebman\, Louie Bellson\, Marvin “Smitty” Smith\, Don Byron\, Geoff Keezer and many others. He has performed at the VJC with his quartet and as a duo with drummer\, Lewis Nash. \nAs the daughter of Chinese immigrants raised in Houston\, Texas\, Helen Sung embodies two diverse cultures and has discovered a musical voice and identity that are true to both – and more importantly\, true to herself. Initially a student of the Western Classical tradition (she holds a Masters in classical piano performance from the University of Texas)\, Sung says her first connection to jazz “felt like an emancipation.” She was accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance in its 1995 inaugural year\, where she studied with Ron Carter\, Jimmy Heath\, and Sir Roland Hanna. Her student ensemble toured with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Upon graduation from the program\, Sung began to garner awards while performing and recording with some of the top musicians in the field\, including Clark Terry\, Louis Bellson\, Steve Turre\, Regina Carter\, T.S. Monk\, and the Mingus Dynasty Band. She has toured as a Jazz Ambassador with the US State Department. Sung has released six albums as a leader and has appeared on over sixty recordings as a side-woman. Her latest project\, Sung with Words\, is a composition and performance effort supported by Chamber Music America and a collaboration with former US Poet Laureate Dana Gioia. Sung performed this work at the VJC in March 2019 with an all-star ensemble. \nBassist-composer\, Marcus McLaurine has shared the bandstand with Dizzy Gillespie\, Melba Liston\, Kenny Burrell\, James Moody\, Lou Donaldson\, Dame Cleo Laine\, Joe Williams\, Jon Hendricks\, Abbey Lincoln\, and the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones. SUMMARY:Eugene Uman’s Convergence Quartet
DESCRIPTION:This event will be live streamed on our homepage and on Facebook. It will be preceded by a pre-recorded interview with New England Public Radio host and jazz blogger\, Tom Reney \nEugene Uman is the director of the Vermont Jazz Center and performs as a pianist in numerous projects. His June concert is a representation of a year’s worth of composing and collaborating with various musicians and an opportunity for him to assemble a band that manifests his vision and unites his musical influences. He will be performing with vocalist Wanda Houston\, bassist David Picchi and drummer Jon Fisher. Uman’s energetic playing and writing style is flavored with the Latin rhythms that he has absorbed during his tenure living in Colombia where he initiated the jazz studies programs at la Universidad de EAFIT and el Colegio de Música de Medellín. Several of his compositions employ forms and grooves adapted from Colombian music such as cumbia\, pasillo\, puya\, bambuco\, and currulao. They are also strongly influenced by his bebop mentors: Sheila Jordan\, Howard Brofsky\, Mike Longo and Jimmy Heath as well as by the sounds of his youth when he played in rock and blues bands. A true protégé\, she received a full scholarship to Berklee School of Music at age 11 where she was mentored by the legendary Jack DeJohnette. After Berklee\, Carrington’s talent\, ability and work ethic have earned her recognition as one of the most formidable musicians on the scene today. Carrington received an honorary doctorate at Berklee in 2003 and was appointed professor there in 2007. She now holds the Zildjian Chair in Performance and teaches at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Carrington toured with Herbie Hancock between 1997 and 2007 and has performed with the top musicians in the jazz world including Wayne Shorter\, Al Jarreau\, Stan Getz\, David Sanborn\, Joe Sample\, Cassandra Wilson\, Clark Terry\, and Dianne Reeves. \nCarrington’s extensive recording career includes several albums she released as a leader\, including The Mosaic Project\, for which she won a Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Album\, and Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue\, for which she won a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album—becoming the first woman ever to win a Grammy in this category. Her recording credits include work with Carlos Santana\, John Scofield\, Terence Blanchard\, Dianne Reeves\, George Duke\, Nancy Wilson\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Geri Allen\, among many others. \nSchedule of Events\nSaturday May 23rd\, 8:00 pm\n\nPerformance\nPremiere of new music videos\nDiscussion and Q&A\n\nTerri Lyne Carrington and Social Science’s scheduled performance at the Jazz Center meets the challenges of our times by embracing technology; they will be expanding the event to include enhanced educational and communicative opportunities. The event kicks off at 8:00 PM on Saturday\, May 23rd. The first hour will be a debut presentation of three videos of tunes from their recent recording. These videos will be recorded beforehand in the individual studios of each of the six musicians; their videographer will then craft the six layers\, combining and editing each of the musical performances\, into a unified whole. They will do this for each of the three tunes. After streaming these three videos\, the group will come together\, along with renowned activist Susan Rosenberg\, in a Zoom panel discussion which will be moderated by Downbeat correspondent John Murph and VJC Director Eugene Uman. Together they will discuss the videos\, the salient points and lessons learned; they will give advice on how we as a concerned community can move forward as doers rather than followers. \nWhile the first half of Saturday’s offering reflects the first\, structured portion of their recent recording\, Waiting Game\, the second hour will begin with two open\, improvised pieces. This reflects the second portion of their album: a four part\, freely improvised suite called “Dreams and Desperate Measures.” As Carrington said in the Berklee interview\, “my goal was to go in to the studio and play for an hour without stopping\, with no direction and to not do it twice – people are so used to hearing messages verbally that there’s not enough room left for the imagination.” Aaron Parks added “yes\, there are many things that we’re against that we’re protesting. But there are also many things that we’re for: the idea of leaving room for each other\, letting others take the lead\, listening to each other and creating something together\, that’s democracy in action.” For the Jazz Center’s livestream performance\, the group will be dealing with the limits of latency (the delay that exists when communicating over the internet) because all the musicians will be performing from their own personal practice spaces spanning locations from Boston to Seattle. Carrington seems unfazed\, or perhaps intrigued by the possibilities. In a recent phone call she said that\, in this context\, they will approach the freely improvised segment more like a conversation than a groove-based piece. All six of the band members will be featured in two separate offerings of about 10 minutes each. Since that fateful night this group has toured the world and recorded numerous albums. According to the New York Times\, they are the “the best organ trio of the last decade.” \n  \nBernstein was mentored by two guitar legends: Vermont Jazz Center Founder Attila Zoller as well as Jim Hall. Hall has gone on record stating that Bernstein “…has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive guitarist I’ve heard. He plays the best of them all for swing\, logic\, feel and taste.” Bernstein played and recorded four albums with Lou Donaldson who concurs by saying that “Some people just have it…most of the time you have to teach someone what to do\, but Peter knows it all.” Bernstein has twenty albums out as a leader and has also appeared on hundreds of recordings including sessions with Sonny Rollins\, George Coleman\, Renée Fleming\, Jimmy Cobb\, Linda Rondstadt\, The Blue Note 7\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Melvin Rhyne\, Nicholas Payton\, Joshua Redman and many others.

We feel that postponing the show best supports the anticipated health needs of our community with respect to the Corona virus and COVID-19 situation. Write letters to your friends. Contact your legislators to demand a responsive heath care system. Demand that government\, at all levels\, speak the objective\, scientific truth to us.  Above all\, be kind.” \nWe look forward to reuniting with each of you in person as soon as possible. \nIn the music\, \nEugene Uman\nVJC Director \nWhen deciding on which emerging artists to feature in the Jazz Center’s season\, we put out a call to a group of young jazz lovers: “who would you like to hear?” The most requested name was easily vibraphonist Joel Ross\, who had appeared at the VJC before as a sideman with Marquis Hill in February 2018. With the impetus of the release of his debut album on Blue Note Records\, KingMaker\, we are happy to present Ross at the VJC with his own ensemble. As Jazz Times noted about him: “Not since Stefon Harris’ arrival 20 years ago has the jazz world heard a young vibraphonist intent on exploring so many dimensions. KingMaker shows us a player deeply versed in the jazz vibes tradition who’s also internalized the atmospherics of ECM and EDM as surely as he has the grooves of hip-hop and M-Base. On his first recording\, Ross oozes potential.” \nRoss was a precocious musician growing up in Chicago\, playing at church and attending programs at the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Launching quickly through the Brubeck Institute\, the New School and the bands of highly esteemed young colleagues like Makaya McCraven and James Francies\, Ross he is now living his dream. In the promo for Blue Note Records\, Ross states “I never had a doubt that I was going to do music… My whole life it was just about finding a way to do it.” Ross is now a force to be reckoned with!

DESCRIPTION:Featuring: Victor Lewis\, Edward Simon\, Carroll Dashiell\, Jr.\, & Giveton Gelin\nSimply put\, Bobby Watson is one of the most important alto saxophonists/jazz musicians on the scene today. His recorded output measures in the hundreds\, he is revered as a jazz educator\, and many of his compositions have become jazz standards. Watson earned the limelight as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, where he served as music director and recorded 12 albums between 1977 and 1981. After leaving the Messengers\, Watson became a sideman with Max Roach\, Louis Hayes\, the Marsalis Brothers\, George Coleman and Sam Rivers. He also provided a supporting role for a number of vocalists including: Joe Williams\, Dianne Reeves\, Lou Rawls\, Betty Carter and Carmen Lundy. \nBut the group Watson is best known for is the ensemble that will perform at the Jazz Center: Horizon. Watson\, along with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis\, launched the first edition of Horizon\, an acoustic quintet modeled in many ways after the Jazz Messengers but one with its own distinct slightly more modern twist. The group is now considered one of the preeminent small groups of the mid-1980s to mid-1990s when they toured constantly and recorded several highly acclaimed titles for Blue Note and Columbia. Watson and Lewis continue as the backbone of the group. At the VJC’s performance they will be joined by venerable alumni pianist Ed Simon and bassist Carroll Dashiell\, Jr.\, as well as trumpeter Giveton Gelin.

DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Oklahoma-born singer and pianist\, Champian Fulton\, seems to be always on tour.  She will soon be performing in Germany\, Denmark\, France\, Italy\, Spain\, California\, Chicago…and now – Vermont!  Fulton grew up around jazz. Her father ran the Clark Terry Summer Jazz Workshop\, so she was surrounded by music and hung out with the legendary players within Clark Terry’s circle of luminaries. As a young girl\, she learned repertoire and performed with Louis Hayes\, Lou Donaldson\, Frank Wess\, but it was Clark Terry who mentored her in the art of performance\, music business and rehearsal technique. Listeners stroll through town and listen free of charge as jazz music is performed by students and young pros. \nSaturday Night\, November 2nd at 8 pm\nEmerging Artist\, 36 year-old Cuban pianist Harold López-Nussa headlines the Festival with his quartet on Saturday\, Nov. 2nd. Harold and his brother\, drummer Ruy Adrián\, were born into a highly respected family in the Cuban music world. In 2018\, the Kennedy Center paid tribute to this family’s legacy. The music the López-Nussa brothers play is based on Cuban clave; it is thrilling\, danceable and energetic. They will be joined at the Jazz Center by trumpeter Mayquel González and bassist Julio César González. \nWithin two days of release\, López-Nussa’s newest album\, Un Día Cualquiera was The Most Added on Jazz and College Radio in the United States. In the past year alone\, López-Nussa has performed for sold-out audiences at the Kennedy Center and SFJAZZ and numerous jazz festivals.

SUMMARY:Nicholas Payton + Cyrille Aimée Duo
DESCRIPTION:It came as a big surprise when New Orleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton agreed to play the Jazz Center\, but only because he chose to perform as a duo with French vocalist Cyrille Aimée. The simple question to him: trumpet and voice? His response: “She has a looper\, and I play all the instruments: trumpet\, keys\, bass… and we often sound like a full band.” After listening to samples of their performances and the audience’s gleeful response\, we realized that this duo performance is going to create some of the hippest magic of the season. \nNicholas Payton is one of the leading trumpeters of our time. His first major recording was with Elvin Jones. He received a Grammy award for an album he recorded with elder statesman Doc Cheatham. Payton now has 15 albums out as a leader. He is also a provocative thinker who writes: “I don’t play jazz…I play Postmodern New Orleans Music.” \nDuring the annual gathering of the Django Reinhardt Festival in her hometown in France\, Cyrille Aimée would take part in the fireside sing-alongs that exposed her to the joys of gypsy jazz\, and their spontaneous\, nomadic and music-filled way of life. Traveling to New York for school she developed her skills and locked in her passion for creative improvising and jazz standards. She is winner of the Montreux Jazz Vocal competition\, the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal competition and was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk competition. Aimée now has 8 albums out as a leader.

SUMMARY:Steve Turre Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Trombonist Steve Turre has been lauded as “one of the finest trombonists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries’ by All Music Guide to Jazz. He learned how to play by working with some of modern jazz’s greatest masters: Art Blakey\, McCoy Tyner\, Woody Shaw\, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Turre’s depth and breadth is beyond scope. He is credited with over 600 recording appearances and defies listeners’ expectations by performing stylistically accurate gems in settings that range from Free to Bop\, Latin to Soul\, ballads to blues. Turre follows the current of his mentors J.J. Johnson and Woody Shaw: “I like to swing and I like to play the blues. I’m not ashamed to swing and I’m not afraid to swing. I think it’s the foundation of the music and I’m proud of it.” Turre has his own voice on the trombone and also diverges from the mainstream by performing on conch shells carefully cut to specific pitches. He first learned of the shell instrument from yet another mentor\, Rahsaan Roland Kirk\, and later deepened his fascination during a trip to Mexico\, when he discovered from relatives that his ancestors had long played shells in their native culture. Turre has been a multi-year winner in both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes\, Downbeat\, and Jazziz for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (conch shells).

It serves as an expression of gratitude to Jordan for her loving and generous 20-plus year involvement in our community as a mentor and performer. VJC director\, Eugene Uman usually performs on this date with his Convergence Project. This concert is a golden opportunity for him to join forces with one of the vocal legends of our time in its stead. \nOther featured artists: \nGenevieve Rose\, bass (toured Colombia\, S.A. with Sheila and Eugene)\nClarence Penn\, drums (former VJC Summer Workshop faculty member) \nIn her autobiography “Jazz Child\, a Portrait of Sheila Jordan\,” Jordan tells of how the legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker “gave me courage by telling me I was unique in my sound and that I had million-dollar ears.” Her 1963 debut on Blue Note Records\, Portrait of Sheila\, is considered a jazz classic. Since then she has recorded over 22 albums as a leader and appeared as a guest soloist on hundreds of others. Along with the NEA Jazz Master Award\, Jordan has received an IAJE Humanitarian Award\, a Mary Lou Williams’ Women in Jazz Lifetime of Service Award and many others. SUMMARY:Pedrito Martínez and Alfredo Rodriguez Duo
DESCRIPTION:Two of Cuba’s greatest young musical masters will come together in an incendiary duo performance. Pedrito Martínez (b. 1973) is the winner of the Thelonious Monk competition in percussion and Alfredo Rodriguez (b. 1985) has quickly emerged as one of the finest Cuban jazz pianists after being “discovered” by legendary producer Quincy Jones. Martínez’ fame spread initially due to his work with the folkloric ensemble\, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas\, which led to work with Jane Bunnett’s Spirit of Havana in 1998. Since then he has become one of the most highly regarded Afro-Cuban percussionists in the world. Pianist Rodriguez attended three music conservatories in Cuba\, winning classical piano competitions in each. After performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2016\, he was invited by Quincy Jones to collaborate on a project that was presented at the Shanghai World Expo. These two Grammy-nominated artists first worked together on Rodriquez’ 2012 release Invasion Parade. Since that initial session they have had the rare arrangement of performing together as a duo\, leaving audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing.

DESCRIPTION:Nine Performing Ensembles to Highlight International Jazz Day at the Vermont Jazz Center \nThe Vermont Jazz Center honors International Jazz Day 2019 with a concert featuring students from nine VJC ensembles. On Sunday May 5th at 3:00 PM\, come enjoy the sounds of the Youth Jazz Ensemble\, the Soubrette Jazz Choir\, the Latin Jazz Ensemble\, Blue Note Ensemble\, Samba Troup\, two guitar ensembles\, the ’Ukelele Jazz Ensemble\, and the Vermont Jazz Center Sextet. The event will be held at the Vermont Jazz Center and each group will perform a 20-minute set. Ensemble I will play “Bernie’s Tune” (Bernie Miller)\, “Little Sunflower” (Freddie Hubbard)\, “Blues in the Closet” (Oscar Pettiford)\, and “Triste” (Jobim). Ensemble 2 will play “Caravan” (Juan Tizol)\, “Do Nothin’ ‘till You Hear From Me” (Ellington)\, “Four” (Davis)\, and “Unit 7” (Sam Jones). \nAt 3:50 the VJC’s Youth Jazz Ensemble\, coached by Eugene Uman and Mike McKinney\, will perform “Cariba” (Wes Montgomery)\, “Milestones” (Miles Davis)\, “Killer Joe” (Benny Golson)\, and “Lady Bird” (Tadd Dameron). Performers include Naomi Hed (trumpet)\, Zach Thomas (trombone)\, Maia McNeill (clarinet)\, Alex Beshay (piano)\, Michael McKinney (bass) and Wycke Gangle on drums.  \nAt 4:15\, the 14 member Latin Jazz Ensemble will hit the ground running with performances of “Elena\, Elena”\, a piece that uses a Puerto Rican plena rhythm by Manny Oquendo (arr. Julian Gerstin)\, “A Felicidade\,” a bossa nova by Antonio Carlos Jobim (arr. Eugene Uman)\, a guajira composed and arranged by Gerstin called “La Casa Violeta\,” and “Nuevo Paradigma\,” a piece based on a bomba rhythm that was composed and arranged by Uman. \nAt 4:45\, the ‘Ukelele Jazz Ensemble will take the stage. This group\, under the direction of Ben Carr\, features Gail Nunziata\, Marcia Hanson\, Chris Andres\, Melissa Dawson\, Ron Kelley\, Steven Vannoy\, and Jenny Kilgore.  Their repertoire will include “Ain’t Misbehavin’” by Fats Waller\, “Four On Six” by Wes Montgomery\, “Pineapple Mango” by Daniel Ho\, “Equinox” by John Coltrane and “St. Thomas” by Sonny Rollins. \nAt 5:15\, The Soubrette Jazz Choir\, led by Anna Patton\, will present richly harmonized arrangements of swing\, jazz\, and blues numbers. They’ll be performing “Out to Breakfast” by Pete Sutherland\, “Room of my own” and “Long-Beard Wise” by Anna Patton\, “Dream” by Johnny Mercer and “Twisted” by Annie Ross and Wardell Gray. Instrumentalists joining the choir will be Anna Patton on tenor guitar\, Matthew Sharff on bass\, and Ron Kelley on the saxophone. They will perform two other times this spring. For more information about those events\, please contact the instructor directly at anna@annapatton.com. \nThe Blue Note Ensemble will slip through a creative portal at 5:50 under the direction of instructor and drummer Claire Arenius. This group will be stretching out on “Cape Verdean Blues”  (Horace Silver) and then three tunes often credited to Miles Davis (although each for each of these tunes\, the composer’s credits have been disputed): “Blue and Green\,” “Nardis\,” and “Freedom Jazz Dance.” The Blue Note Ensemble’s front line of tenor and alto saxophones plus guitar makes for a beautiful mix. Performers in this group include Ron Kelley and Louise Ewing (saxophones)\, Sky Borax (guitar)\, Judith Williams (piano)\, Charlie Gerard (bass)\, Henry Zachinni (drums). \nThe final ensemble scheduled to perform on May 5th will be by the VJC Sextet. This group is made up of area music professionals associated with the VJC who bring their tight arrangements to schools and assisted living communities. Their repertoire for Sunday afternoon will be four songs arranged by the group’s musical director\, Rob Freeberg: “Along Came Betty\,” (Benny Golson)\, “Out of the Night Came You\,” (Horace Silver)\, Sister Cheryl (Tony Williams); they will also play “Tell Me a Bedtime Story\,” (Herbie Hancock\, arr. by UVM student Matt Nemeth)\, and “Blues for All”  (Eric Alexander). SUMMARY:Russell Malone Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The New York Times has called Malone “a guitarist of taste and tradition.” As a young man\, Malone toured with several artists fitting that mold including Nat King Cole’s brother\, Freddie Cole\, Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall. But Malone is a guitarist’s guitarist who has elevated the creativity of the bebop line to a sublime art-form. In response to listening to Malone during a Downbeat Blindfold Test\, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel responded by noting “Obviously\, we are in the capable hands of a master. Absolutely fluid touch and beautiful integration between moving lines and harmonic cadences… to play this stuff is extremely hard. This is an absolute master\, the best of the best.” Malone developed his sound to match the soul-drenched guitar sound common to his home state of Georgia before moving to New York where he honed his own\, completely personal style. Malone is now one of the leading guitarists on the scene today\, a mature and revered master. Perhaps he is best known more for his recorded work accompanying other jazz greats like Kenny Barron\, Ron Carter or Jimmy Smith\, but Malone has fourteen albums out as a leader of his own collaborations. \nI’ve had some great sideman gigs\, but you don’t really hear Russell Malone until you hear the Russell Malone band. SUMMARY:Sullivan Fortner Trio
DESCRIPTION:Winner of numerous accolades\, including the Cole Porter Fellowship and the Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists\, Sullivan Fortner is one of the top players of his generation. A New Orleans native\, he was the valedictorian of his high school class and then went on to receive degrees from Oberlin and Manhattan School of Music. Fortner’s vision honors the jazz legacy and moves it forward. The New York Times claims that he has “an extravagant amount of talent\,” a fact that is illustrated by the jazz luminaries who continue to feature him as a sideman: Billy Hart\, Roy Hargrove\, Gary Bartz\, Wynton Marsalis\, Paul Simon\, John Scofield\, Cecile McLorin Salvant\, Nicholas Peyton\, Christian Scott\, Donald Harrison and many others. He will appear at the VJC with his working trio.

SUMMARY:Helen Sung: Sung with Words
DESCRIPTION:This concert is a live presentation of a project funded by a 2014 Chamber Music America New Works Grant. It presents a collection of songs composed and arranged for eight musicians by pianist Helen Sung to the poetry of the former chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts and current California Poet Laureate\, Dana Gioia. When Sung described her feelings about missing the meaning of poetry\, Gioia (who has also collaborated with Dave Brubeck and Paquito D’Rivera) replied: “Poetry is meant to be read out lout\, it’s musical: listen to the rhythm of the words\, the sounds – and the meaning will come.” Together they created a jazz song cycle that “has New York City in the air.” Sung assembled an ensemble of world class vocalists and instrumentalists\, including vocalists Charenée Wade and Carolyn Leonhart\, trumpeter Jason Palmer\, saxophonist John Ellis\, bassist Rick Rosato\, drummer Adam Cruz\, and percussionist Samuel Torres to\, according to Sung\, “explore themes of the human condition – love\, betrayal\, wonder\, mystery – bringing together the musical and literary worlds in a thrilling experience.” \n“On one hand\, Helen Sung with Words last night at the Jazz Standard was a chance to hear both multi-reedman John Ellis and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen blaze together in front of a tight Latin-flavored rhythm section\, a treat not to be missed. On the other\, it was an opportunity to witness the most cutting edge of vocal jazz\, a tantalizingly eclectic\, often harrowingly relevant work in progress bookended by a couple of real burners.” -Review by New York Music Daily
