SUMMARY:2024 Convergence Project
DESCRIPTION:Eugene Uman is the director of the Vermont Jazz Center and performs as a pianist in numerous projects. His annual June concert is a representation of a year’s worth of composing and collaborating with various musicians and an opportunity for him to assemble a dream band that manifests his vision and unites his musical influences. Uman’s energetic playing and writing style is flavored with the Latin rhythms that he has absorbed during his tenure living in Colombia where he initiated the jazz studies programs at la Universidad de EAFIT and el Colegio de Música de Medellín. Several of his compositions employ forms and grooves adapted from Colombian music such as cumbia\, pasillo\, puya\, bambuco\, and currulao. They are also strongly influenced by his bebop mentors: Sheila Jordan\, Howard Brofsky\, Mike Longo and Jimmy Heath as well as by the sounds of his youth when he played in rock and blues bands. Uman’s compositions draw from a vocabulary of modern jazz\, hard bop\, rock\, soul\, Latin American rhythms and gospel; listeners can expect a “convergence” of the music he loves in a mash-up of styles where groove is king. \nThis presentation of the Convergence Project is the last show of the Vermont Jazz Center’s 2023-24 season. For this June 15th performance\, Uman will present a sextet with Haneef Nelson (trumpet)\, Jason Robinson (saxophone)\, Cameron Brown (acoustic bass)\, and Brian Shankar Adler (drums). \nHaneef Nelson plays trumpet in the VJC big band. As a youth he developed his love for jazz at New York’s Jazzmobile Program where he played in ensembles taught by jazz luminaries such as Cecil Bridgewater\, Dr. Donald Byrd (his mentor)\, John Stubblefield\, Frank Foster\, Charles Davis and many others. He attended the African-American Music Department at the Hartt School where he studied under Jackie McLean and Nat Reeves. Nelson then went on to study Jazz Composition and Arranging at UMASS Amherst and is now finishing up his Ph.D. at Hartt. Nelson has performed with Yoron Israel\, Avery Sharpe\, Bill Saxton\, Paul Brown\, Feya Faku\, Joe Ford\, Charles Tolliver\, Wayne Escoffrey\, Bill Lowe\, Musiq Soulchild\, and numerous others. \nSaxophonist Jason Robinson has released 18 albums as leader or co-leader and appeared on nearly 50 albums in total. He performs regularly as a soloist (acoustically and with electronics) with his group Janus Ensemble and in numerous collaborative contexts. He has performed at festivals and prominent venues through North\, Central\, and South America\, Europe\, and East Asia\, and performed with Peter Kowald\, George Lewis\, Anthony Davis\, Myra Melford\, Nicole Mitchell\, Amiri Baraka\, Howard Johnson\, Toots and the Maytals\, Groundation\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Eugene Chadbourne\, Mark Dresser\, Gerry Hemingway\, Kei Akagi\, Babatunde Lea\, Mel Martin\, Raphe Malik\, San Francisco Mime Troupe\, Makanda Project and many others. Robinson is Professor of Music at Amherst College and holds a Ph.D. in Music from the University of California\, San Diego. His work investigates the relationship between improvised and popular music\, experimentalism\, and cultural identity. His writing has been published in numerous journals and several edited volumes. \nDetroit-born bassist Cameron Brown has been playing jazz and free music professionally since the mid-1960s when he toured Europe with the bands of George Russell\, Archie Shepp\, Don Cherry and Donald Byrd. Career highlights include a fifty-year musical relationship with National Endowment of the Arts jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan\, a tour of Japan with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers\, and a long tenure with the legendary George Adams/Don Pullen Quartet. Brown’s discography includes six albums under his own leadership and over two hundred recordings as a sideman including appearances with Dannie Richmond\, Joe Lovano\, Connie Crothers\, George Russell\, Archie Shepp\, Lee Konitz\, Chet Baker\, Mal Waldron\, Grover Washington Jr.\, Charlie Persip\, Luicano Pavarotti\, Ed Blackwell\, Ronnie Cuber\, Ricky Ford\, Beaver Harris\, Grady Tate\, Mike Longo\, Sheila Jordan\, Jim McNeely\, Steve Grossman\, Betty Carter\, John Hicks\, Dewey Redman\, Houston Person\, Etta Jones\, Jane Ira Bloom\, and many others. \nDrummer Brian Shankar Adler was once described by JazzTimes Magazine as “a polyrhythmic force… still somehow capable of evoking the delicacy of a summer breeze.” Adler has performed in caves\, forests and glacial ice fields as well as Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center and other venues. He appears on over 40 recordings\, including several as a leader. His music video\, Mantra\, won best music video at the Transcinema International Film Festival in Peru and was an official selection at the Quiet City Film Festival in Brooklyn. In 2013\, Adler was a guest soloist with La Bomba de Tiempo in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. He has traveled to Germany to perform with singer Sunny Kim and to Kuwait to perform with oudist Ahmed Alshaiba. He was composer-in-residence at Antenna Cloud Farm and was commissioned by Palaver Strings. Shankar Adler is a winner of the 2021 Lifetime Arts/National Guild Fellowship. He has worked professionally with Sheila Jordan\, Jay Clayton\, Guillermo Klein\, Michael Leonhart Orchestra\, Kate McGarry\, Ray Vega and many others. He currently teaches at Bates College\, Bowdoin College\, University of Maine and the Vermont Jazz Center.

SUMMARY:Artemis
DESCRIPTION:Hold onto your hats – the music of the collective group Artemis can only be performed by the very best musicians who have come together in a perfect storm to present a challenging\, appealing repertoire filled with surprises and engaging grooves. Each member of the group is a noted composer\, interpreter of the jazz tradition\, and master of their given instrument. Their paths crossed as a result of a festival opportunity that was offered to their empathic organizer\, pianist Renee Rosnes. After realizing the solid chemistry and delight in playing music as a group\, they came up with a good name\, recorded a terrific album\, navigated Covid and then recorded yet another amazing disc with a few personnel changes. Artemis is distinctive not only for bringing together singular artists\, each renowned for their own remarkable solo careers\, but for its multi-generational and globe-spanning line-up. Despite its relatively brief existence\, Artemis has been featured in Vanity Fair and on NPR’s Jazz Night in America\, and has performed on some of the country’s most iconic stages\, from Carnegie Hall\, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Tisch Center for the Arts to the Newport Jazz Festival.  Since each one of Artemis’ musicians is a busy leader\, it is difficult for them to carve out the time to perform as an ensemble. This concert provides a rare opportunity to hear this super-group comprised of jazz-leaders\, a “killer line-up of players” (NPR) who “move gracefully through various styles and moods to sound\, by turns\, authoritative and playful\, locked-in or loose-limbed” (Wall Street Journal).

SUMMARY:8th Annual Solo Jazz Piano Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:At this celebration of solo piano in the jazz tradition\, a collaborative spirit imbues the presentations of four distinguished headliners and two emerging artists. The Festival includes performances\, master-classes\, a Q+A session plus interviews with the artists. \n2024 headliners include Aaron Parks\, Alfredo Rodriguez\, Hey Rim Jeon\, and Jacky Terrasson. Emerging Artists are Yujin Han (Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice\, Global Jazz Institute) and Mathew Mueller (Amherst College). \nThe Solo Jazz Piano Festival is one of the cornerstones of the VJC’s annual programming. Now in its 8th year\, this festival has presented 48 pianists\, including some of the world’s top artists. Our objective is to illustrate how the piano is used as a vehicle to indicate the diversity of the jazz language\, the unique impact (emotionally and technically) of each performer\, and the instrument’s vast capabilities to demonstrate stylistic and historic breadth. \nHeadliner artists will each offer a 50-minute solo piano set and a masterclass\, open to pianists and music lovers alike (no experience required). Each emerging artist will offer a 25-minute set. All pianists will participate in a Q and A panel-session where questions will be accepted from the audience. \nThe VJC is grateful to Mike McKenzie for his gift of the VJC’s Steinway Concert Grand (D). This tremendous instrument was inaugurated by Fred Hersch in 2016 and was once owned by the classical concert pianist Lorin Hollander\, who in 1964 was called “the leading pianist of his generation” by the New York Times. It is maintained by Bill Ballard who donates his skillful mastery to the VJC. \nPast performers of the VJC Solo Jazz Piano Festival include NEA Jazz Masters Toshiko Akiyoshi and Joanne Brackeen; jazz legends Stanley Cowell\, Luis Perdomo\, Helen Sung\, Kirk Lightsey\, Benny Green\, Orrin Evans and George Cables; emerging artists have included Christian Sands\, Julius Rodriguez\, Myra Melford\, Sullivan Fortner\, Miro Sprague\, Franz Robert\, Kris Adams and Craig Taborn. Renowned piano-educators David Berkman and Kenny Werner have also been presented. \nThe solo jazz piano festival is for all music lovers\, not just pianists and other musicians. Anyone interested in both the practical and spiritual aspects of jazz and improvised music will be delighted by the offerings. \nSCHEDULE \nFriday\, April 19\, 2024\nHeadliner Concert\n\n7:30 PM – Hey Rim Jeon performance (50-minute set)\n8:30 PM – Aaron Parks performance (50-minute set)\n\n Saturday\, April 20\, 2024\nWorkshops\n\n10:00 AM – Hey Rim Jeon – Embodying your Inner-ensemble in Solo Piano Jazz\n11:00 AM – Aaron Parks – Awakening the Music Within\n12:00 PM – Alfredo Rodriguez – A Glimpse into Jazz Improvisation\n1:00 PM – Jacky Terrasson – Questions and Answers\n\nEmerging Artist Presentations:\n\n3:30 PM –Mathew Mueller\n4:00 PM – Yujin Han\n\nPanel Discussion\n\n4:45 PM – Panel discussion with all pianists (juried questions)\n\nHeadliner Concert\n\n7:30 PM – Alfredo Rodriguez performance (50-minute set)\n8:30 PM – Jacky Terrasson performance (50-minute set)\n\n

SUMMARY:Mike Stern Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Mike Stern is a six-time Grammy nominee who received a “Certified Legend Award” from Guitar Player magazine and made Downbeat Magazine’s list of the 75 best guitarists of all time. A true guitar hero\, Stern has played with the best of the best. He started off\, fresh out of Berklee College\, by joining Blood\, Sweat & Tears at the age of 22. After a three-year stint with the band\, Stern moved on to play with Billy Cobham\, then joining Miles Davis with whom he recorded three albums; following this he toured and recorded with Jaco Pastorious before coming back to work with Davis. Stern has recorded over 25 albums as a leader and appeared on over 500 recordings as a sideman or guest artist with artists such as Billy Hart\, Victor Wooten\, the Yellowjackets\, Joe Henderson\, Makoto Ozone\, Michael Brecker\, Andy Narell\, Richard Bona\, Jaco Pastorious\, Jim Hall\, Arturo Sandoval\, Bob Berg\, Billy Cobham\, Kronos Quartet\, Tom Harrell\, Pat Martino\, Dave Matthews\, Jerry Bergonzi\, Eddie Palmieri\, Steps Ahead—a virtual whose-who of the top-level jazz players of his era. \nStern’s guitar sound is characterized by a full-bodied sustain when he plays long tones. He is also known for his blistering runs comprised of fully intentional rapid-fire sequences of notes that are both angular and melodic. Stern’s guitar sound has evolved into an often-copied aesthetic that serves as an important reference for geeky guitarists who have followed in his footsteps. But nobody can truly copy Mike Stern – he is the original\, a consummate musician who illuminates jazz fusion with dynamics\, energy\, and brilliance.

SUMMARY:Makaya McCraven
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY EVENT\, 4:00 pm \nSOLD OUT \nDrummer Makaya McCraven “has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality”  (New York Times).  His most recent album\, In These Times\, has been singled out as one of the best jazz albums by the New York Times\, Pitchfork\, Stereogum\, NPR and others. \nBorn in Paris and raised in the Amherst\, Massachusetts area\, McCraven grew up in a household where he was immersed in music. As a child he quickly took to drums\, the instrument of his father\, Stephen McCraven\, jazz drummer who was in the bands of Archie Shepp and Yusef Latif. He is also strongly influenced by the music of his mother\, a Hungarian singer and flutist\, who fused Eastern European folk melodies (many in odd meters) with the music that surrounded her in her new\, adopted homeland. In a recent documentary McCraven’s mother\, Agnes Zsigmondi\, is heard saying that one of the things that gave her the most joy in life was playing music with her (then) 13-year-old son and his friends. McCraven attended UMass Amherst as a music student and formed and recorded with a band called Cold Duck Complex. He later moved to Chicago\, where he joined Bobby Broom’s trio and became quickly recognized as a drummer capable of a performing at a high level in a wide variety of styles including jazz\, hip-hop\, folkloric music and rock. Now a mature musician\, McCraven has evolved into one of the most unique and influential voices of his generation. His records are grooving conceptual projects. For his first two albums he recorded\, sampled and remixed his own band\, much like what Teo Marcero and Miles Davis did on Bitches Brew\, creating organic soundscapes and rhythmical tapestries that defied previous conceptions. In 2020 he recreated the music of a famed release by Gil Scott Heron called I’m New Here respectfully combining Heron’s material with a twenty-first century sensibility. In 2021 he released a project for Blue Note Records called Deciphering the Message where he was given free-reign of their legendary catalogue to create beats. He used samples of masters like Cedar Walton and Art Blakey to seamlessly (and again respectfully) develop their material using his own creative directions.\n \nAt the Jazz Center\, McCraven will show up and surprise us with his magical-sounding offerings that combine acoustic jazz with electric beats\, straight-ahead tunes and spontaneous compositions.

SUMMARY:Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Quartet
DESCRIPTION:According to the New York Times\, “you’re hard pressed to find rising talents more exciting than Camille Thurman.” Thurman is a vocalist\, tenor saxophonist and flutist who continues to garner the highest accolades for her original work and her inspiring interpretations of the jazz legacy. She is a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with whom she wowed audiences as a featured soloist in their performance of John Coltrane’s immortal A Love Supreme and other “Coltrane works predicated upon concepts of freedom and liberation” (Jazz at Lincoln Center). An accomplished performer and composer in her own right\, Thurman has performed with notable jazz and R&B icons Dr. Billy Taylor\, Chaka Khan\, Benny Golson\, George Coleman\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Russell Malone\, Nicholas Payton\, George Benson\, Alicia Keys\, India Arie\, Ciara\, Missy Elliot and many others. Thurman has recorded four albums as a leader and performed as a side-woman on several others including Dianne Reeves’ Beautiful Life and two releases with the LCJO under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. She leads her own quartet which has performed at the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, the International Women in Jazz Festival\, the Super Jazz Ashdod Israel Festival\, The Jazz Gallery and many other prominent jazz venues as well as festivals around the world. \nDiscouraged from playing music full-time due to costs of entering Berklee School of Music\, Thurman graduated with a degree in Geological and Earth Sciences from Binghamton University. Her brilliance was recognized by a music instructor who brought in Tia Fuller as a mentor. Fuller asked Thurman “what are you doing here?” Thurman responded “I’m studying rocks and I’m going to be a scientist. I love dirt and trees and hug the earth all day.” Encouraged by Fuller to pursue music full time\, Thurman embraced the challenge and is now one of the leading players of her generation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cyrus Chestnut Trio
DESCRIPTION:From the church to the conservatory to jazz festivals worldwide\, Cyrus Chestnut is one of the most soul-satisfying pianists on the scene. He transmits transcendent joy to the audience at every opportunity. Perhaps this is because of his deep connection to spirit: “I believe the ability to play music is a gift from God and every time I play\, I’m thankful. Every time I sit down to play\, for me\, is worship and expression\,” he told DownBeat magazine. As a result his music is filled with both the fire and the peace of the Black church. In an interview with NPR he affirmed that recurring theme when asked about how the church affected his playing: “At any given time if you can hear a gospel riff\, it’s just who I am…it’s in my DNA. The church is in my DNA. I think now I have a much deeper passion to simply be able to play\, and so it’s all there. It’s all there – it’s always been there and will always be there.” The confidence and beauty that Chestnut projects has been recognized by myriad legends who have asked him to join their recording projects including Betty Carter\, Little Jimmy Scott\, Carl Allen\, Wynton Marsalis\, James Carter\, Freddie Cole\, Kevin Mahogany\, Dee Dee Bridgewater and many others. And the critics love him too – The Guardian claims his performance on his latest album is “like Oscar Peterson in his heyday.”

SUMMARY:Dayramir González Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pianist “Dayramir González can be added to the pantheon of distinctive Cuban jazz voices… setting the Latin jazz world on fire in America” (Carnegie Hall). This “stunningly gifted pianist” has been cited as one of the few Cuban jazz artists “rescuing the danzón and reinventing the genre on the basis of diverse constructions of identity” (Wall Street Journal). González’ music fuses urban Latin music while honoring traditional structures. He is a classically trained musician who studied initially with Chucho Valdes’s sister\, Mayra Caridad Valdés\, and then continued in the esteemed Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte de Cuba\, earning his “monster technique” by fortifying his given talent with hours of practice in classical studies. At the age of 16\, González joined former Irakere member\, Oscar Valdes’ Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble Diákara\, and immersed himself in Timba music at the highest level. González has twice won first place in Havana’s JoJazz Festival and earned three Cubadisco Awards\, considered the Grammys of Cuba. He attended Berklee College of music as the first Cuban national “Presidential Scholar” and has joined the Carnegie Hall Stage with other Cuban legends like Chucho and Bebo Valdes as one of the representatives of the up-and-coming generation of Afro-Cuban jazz pianists.

For 48 years we have brought people together using jazz as the catalyst. Jazz is an ensemble-oriented artform that relies on listening and relationships; it pays homage to the wisdom of the masters who have developed an improvisational language propelled by innovations in rhythm. Our program is dedicated to creating playing situations that honor the historical context but embrace forward-thinking concepts through jam sessions\, ensembles and listening opportunities. At the Vermont Jazz Center we believe in hands-on learning\, so theoretical information is fused with playing opportunities (including late night jam sessions) that create a seamless bridge of information and application. \nRegister Now  More Info

SUMMARY:VJC Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Music Under the Stars\nPresented by BMC and Retreat Farm\n  \nThe Vermont Jazz Center’s Big Band will play Saturday\, July 22nd at 6:30 PM; rain date will be July 23rd at 6:30. This year the band will feature vocalist Mark Anagnostopulos in a tribute to one of America’s most important composers\, Duke Edward Kennedy Ellington. \n \nDuke Ellington’s music is widely loved; a small portion of his immense catalog are jazz standards\, performed by jazz bands around the world. But Ellington’s imprint goes way deeper –his impact on the history of modern music cannot be overemphasized. According to music historian Gunther Schuller Ellington was “the most significant composer of his genre.” Some of Ellington’s more familiar compositions include “Satin Doll\,” “Do Nothing ‘till You Hear From Me\,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing\, if it Ain’t Got that Swing\,” and “Mood Indigo.” He also composed major symphonic works\, movie soundtracks\, music for ballet and opera\, and three sacred concerts. \nThe VJC Big Band is a group of area music-professionals that has was formed in 2005 by the late Howard Brofsky and band manager Sherm Fox. Trumpeter Rob Freeberg has been the band’s music director since 2013. Members of the VJC Big band performing at this concert will be guest vocalist\, Mark Anagnostopulos; trumpeters Don Anderson\, Rick Anderson\, Haneef Nelson and Rob Freeberg; woodwind players Michael Zsoldos\, Sherm Fox\, Matt Steckler\, Carl Clements\, and Donna Morse; trombonists Tim Atherton\, Dave Sporny and Amaranth Cole; and rhythm section members Eugene Uman (piano)\, Wes Brown (bass)\, and Steve Rice (drums).

SUMMARY:Convergence Project 2023
DESCRIPTION:In-person and livestreamed event \nEugene Uman is the director of the Vermont Jazz Center and performs as a pianist in numerous projects. \nMasks optional\, light refreshment available. \nDonate to the Livestream

SUMMARY:Renee Rosnes & Bill Charlap
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event\, there will NOT be a livestream. \nPianists Renee Rosnes and Bill Charlap are married and completely devoted to their individual paths in music. Both are currently touring their most recent releases: The Bill Charlap Trio: Street of Dreams (Blue Note)\, and Renee Rosnes: Kinds of Love (Smoke Sessions). Rosnes also leads the supergroup ARTEMIS\, which features Ingrid Jensen\, Nicole Glover\, Alexa Tarantino\, Nicole Ueda and Allison Miller. The band’s second release\, In Real Time (Blue Note) will be released May 5\, 2023. Rosnes also tours and records with legendary bassist Ron Carter’s Foursight Quartet. Charlap’s trio schedule takes him around the world\, and he is the artistic director of 92NY’s Jazz in July Festival. Because Rosnes and Charlap are so busy as solo artists\, their duo performances are rare and celebrated. \nRosnes and Charlap released their debut album\, Double Portrait (Blue Note) in 2010. The Globe and Mail observed\, “…that the two are husband and wife makes this session extra special. Both are exceptional players\, matching flawless technique with effortless lyricism\, and their playing intermingles beautifully\, with one phrase sparking another and ideas bouncing from soloist to accompanist and back.” \nA review in MMusic Magazine noted that\, “Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes are not like most couples. By the time they married in 2007\, each was already a world-renowned jazz pianist with an impressive discography and a packed touring itinerary. The living room of their home is taken up mostly by two Steinway grands.” In discussing their approach to duo play\, Charlap mused\, “We don’t alter our playing styles for each other\, we just listen and react. The result is a new entity comprised of both our voices.” Rosnes adds\, “Certainly we have distinct styles\, but a great deal of common ground existed before we ever sat down to play together. Being married\, I believe there is also an intimate spirit that naturally comes through in the music.” \nThis concert promises a rare opportunity for viewers/listeners to experience a collaborative journey of two artists at the top of their game. Rosnes and Charlap will delight and amaze us with their passionate delivery\, exquisite technique and telepathic interplay. \nMasks optional\, light refreshment available.

SUMMARY:Johnathan Blake Trion with Chris Potter and Linda May Han Oh
DESCRIPTION:Note: this event will happen simultaneously in-person and via livestream. The livestream will ONLY happen on our homepage (it will NOT stream on Facebook) and replay following the event will be limited. \nVJC listeners may remember Blake’s appearance with the Kenny Barron Trio at The Latchis Theater in 2011. The omnipresent drummer has appeared on over 150 recordings with jazz’s revered luminaries; his sixth album as a leader was released by Blue Note in 2021. Side-people on Blake’s recordings have included Robert Glasper\, Tom Harrell\, Chris Potter\, Linda May Han Oh\, Mark Turner and others. Downbeat calls his work “a celebration of life and legacy\, bursting with exuberance and lighthearted energy.” \nHeralded by NPR Music as “the ultimate modernist\,” Blake has recorded with the Mingus Big Band\, Dave Holland\, Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Tom Harrell\, Hans Glawischnig\, Avishai Cohen\, Donny McCaslin\, Linda May Han Oh\, Jaleel Shaw\, Chris Potter\, Maria Schneider\, Alex Sipiagin\, Kris Davis\, Roy Hargrove\, Russell Malone and countless other distinctive voices. He appears on three Grammy-nominated albums\, one with Kenny Barron Trio (Book of Intuition)\, and two with the Mingus Big Band (Tonight at Noon\, and I am Three). \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1976\, Blake is the son of renowned jazz violinist John Blake\, Jr. — himself a stylistic chameleon and an important\, ongoing influence. According to his website\, Blake is “deeply aware of Philadelphia’s role as a historical nerve center and has immersed himself in the city’s storied legacy – not just in jazz\, but also soul\, R&B and hip-hop. In many ways he’s an heir to Philadelphia drum masters such as Philly Joe Jones\, Bobby Durham\, Mickey Roker\, and Ralph Peterson.” Growing up\, he learned from Philadelphia legends like Shirley Scott and Kenny Barron\, and studied at the Settlement Music School with a fertile wave of artists of his own generation including Christian McBride\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Questlove and Jaleel Shaw. \nThe VJC community is especially fortunate to share Johnathan Blake’s Trion featuring Chris Potter and Linda May Han Oh – three of the top leaders in creative music. This is an important group of brilliant musicians who are agile communicators. This concert will provide an exceptional experience for deep listening! \nTo hear this group – check out TRION’s bandcamp page: https://johnathanblake1.bandcamp.com/album/trion

SUMMARY:Mingus Dynasty
DESCRIPTION:VJC Celebrates Charles Mingus’ centennial birthday anniversary with a “nimble and expert” touring group made up of charter members of the Mingus Orchestra. The band was initially formed by Sue Mingus (Charles’ widow) in 1979\, just after Charles Mingus’ death to feature his repertoire and support the musicians he recorded or played with. The group was named after the 1959 album Mingus Dynasty. This concert will further shine a light on Sue Mingus’ acceptance of the 2023 NEA Jazz Master award\, acknowledging her efforts in founding a non-profit honoring Charles Mingus’ legacy. The non-profit she leads employs a three-tiered structure designed to spread the word of Mingus’ repertoire including three Mingus bands (Orchestra\, Big Band and Dynasty)\, an educational division (Let My Children Hear Music)\, and an annual Mingus Music Festival. \nBecause Mingus always said he was first and foremost a composer\, and because he left behind over 300 compositions that deserved to be played\, the Mingus Dynasty band carries on his music\, vision and mission. Today\, four decades later\, the rich legacy of Mingus music ignites the bandstand encouraging new generations of musicians to add their individual voices this rich and varied musical legacy. \nA short list of the many musicians who currently perform in the Mingus Orchestra/Mingus Big Band/Dynasty include Helen Sung\, Freddie Bryant\, Orrin Evans\, Boris Koslov\, Robin Eubanks\, Philip Harper\, Alex Foster\, Sarah Hanahan\, Ron Blake\, Wayne Escoffery\, Frank Ku-umba Lacy\, Adam Cruz\, and many others. Among the group’s esteemed alumni are Jimmy Owens\, Randy Brecker\, Jon Faddis\, Jimmy Knepper\, John Handy\, Joe Farrell\, George Adams\, David Murray\, Clifford Jordan\, Don Pullen\, Roland Hanna\, Jaki Byard\, Dannie Richmond\, Billy Hart\, Charlie Haden and many others.

SUMMARY:VJC Big Band 2022 Scholarship Gala
DESCRIPTION:The Music of Duke Ellington\nIn-person and livestreamed event\n(Masks are required for in-person attendance) \nThis event is the primary fundraiser for the VJC Scholarship Fund which grants an annual average of $27\,000 in scholarships to students\, offsetting fees for VJC ensembles\, private lessons and its world-renowned summer jazz workshop. \nThe VJC Big Band performs the compositions and arrangements of Duke Ellington\, hailed as “America’s greatest composer” by Jazz at Lincoln Center. This swing dance will feature the brilliant clarinet and vocal work of Evan Arntzen plus the finesse of the VJC Big Band\, now in its 19th year. \nDuke Ellington is best known for his danceable hits like Satin Doll and It Don’t Mean a Thing (if it Ain’t Got that Swing)\, but he was much more than a composer of popular music. His prolific creativity\, his visionary use of media\, and his use of art in the fight against racism have uplifted his stature to that of an American legend. Ellington composed over 3\,000 songs and performed in over 20\,000 concerts throughout the United States\, Europe\, Latin America\, Asia and Africa. His big band was one of the longest-lived of any in all of jazz history. Ellington composed familiar hits like Mood Indigo\, but he also created large-scale pieces\, including orchestral and sacred works. \nEllington is widely considered to be one of the United States’ most important composers of any musical form. He earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966\, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969\, and the Legion of Honor by France in 1973; he was posthumously awarded a special award citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board. At his funeral\, attended by over 12\,000 people at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine\, Ella Fitzgerald summed up the occasion\, “It’s a very sad day…A genius has passed.” \nThe VJC pays a swinging tribute to Ellington with a special concert featuring Evan Arntzen\, clarinetist and vocalist known for his work with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks and Catherine Russell. Polish those dancing shoes – it’s been a while!
